Overview:
The Monster is the result of a Star League weapons research project in the early 2580s to
develop an artillery Battlemech for the SLDF. During the Unification War it was found that
BattleMech regiments often left their vehicle based artillery support behind as they
advanced, or had to do without artillery altogether due to terrain. The Monster was designed
to rectify these problems. The 'Mech's high cost and need for frequent maintenance (usually
the jump jets) resulted in only about 3000 being produced.

Capabilities:
Though not a fast 'Mech, the robust bipedal locomotion system enables it to maintain a
maximum speed on long marches. One of the few assault class BattleMechs to mount jump jets,
these units enable the Monster to transverse terrain that would otherwise be an obstacle.
The arm mounted medium lasers and heavy armor provide it with the means necessary to repel
any enemy 'Mechs it may encounter. The two Thumpers have sufficient ammo magazines to
sustain a high volumne, lengthy artillery barrage against enemy units and positions. The
Monster can also carry a wide variety of Thumper shells to meet the ever changing needs of
    the battlefield.

Deployment:
The Monster was usually deployed three to a Lance, with a light 'Mech as a spotter. Monster
Lances were usually attached to regimental headquarters and deployed based on battlefield
needs. When General Kerensky and most of the SLDF departed the Inner Sphere in 2784, most
of the Monsters went with them. A few fell into the hands of Successor States or were found
in mercenary units that had once been part of the SLDF. These, as in the past, were usually
attached to command units . Because of this, most of these Monsters have survived the
Succession Wars more or less intact.

Variants:
The MNS-2R variant removes a medium laser from each arm and replaces them with two heat
sinks. This model is less subject to heat problems, but at the cost of less firepower to
    deal with enemy 'Mechs.

Notable MechWarriors:
MechWarrior Grant DeVaughn - In 2583, during the Reunification War the Star League put into
motion Operation Union Hold to force the Outworlds Alliance into the fold. Unfortunately the
operational timetable for the Star League forces fell into the hands of the Alliance. On the
icy world of Tellman IV, an ambush was set for the invading SLDF at their pre-planned
landing zone. The day long battle became known as the Day of Vengeance. Losses on both sides
were horrendous, but much more so for the SLDF, which had to make a retreat back into space
under fire. One of the heroes of that day was Grant DeVaughn. Just as DeVaughn was marching
his Monster off the Overlord dropship, the ambushing Alliance forces attacked. The
engagement quickly became a swirling firestorm of close quarters BattleMech combat. Despite
being an artillery 'Mech, DeVaughn waded his Monster into the thick of the fight, firing his
Thumpers at point blank range, racking enemies with his lasers, slamming them with his
forearm slabs, kicking out with massive feet and rising up on his jump jets to come crashing
down upon tanks and lesser BattleMechs. The battle ended well after nightfall with the
liftoff of the last SLDF dropship. Grant and his Monster, both severely damaged, were still
standing, but had no choice other than to surrender. Grant DeVaughn was credited with 5
'Mech kills, the destruction of 8 tanks and countless assists that day, more than any other
Monster MechWarrior. He died in 2584 trying to escape from an Outworlds Alliance prisoner of
    war camp.
