Overview:
Little more than a historical footnote, the Shadow Hawk -3H served
as a cover for the introduction of the SHD-2Hb Royal variant. The
increasing tensions of the Third Hidden War spurred the Star League
Defense Force to further strengthen its forces, with the death of First
Lord Simon Cameron in 2751 sending this initiative into overdrive.
The venerable Shadow Hawk was among the first units earmarked to
receive a long-overdue upgrade as part of this initiative.
Ever looking for an opportunity to cause trouble for the Star
League and gaining military intelligence to boot, the Draconis Combine
somehow discovered word of the upgrade program and submitted
its own competitor. Unwilling to give the Combine an insight into the
SHD-2Hb?s performance nor wishing to overly provoke them, the SLDF
commissioned Lang Industries to create a lower-tech variant to fight
    against the DRG-1C Dragon.

Capabilities:
With the procurement competition now being spun as being for
an ?anti-insurgent variant? for the Regular Army, the SHD-3H was a
minimal change to the trusty -2H. A pair of Voelkers machine guns
replaced the SRM launcher, being cleverly mounted to mimic the
Holly?s original housing, which greatly increased the ?Mech?s punch
    against infantry.

Deployment:
Despite expecting to lose the competition, Luthien Armor Works
supplied the SLDF two lances of Dragon -1C prototypes for testing,
having been already assured by the Combine that it would cover their
costs by picking up its production. Although the Dragon was better
armored and had longer-ranged weaponry, the Shadow Hawk had a
slight edge in mobility and close-range fire power. Unsurprisingly, the
contract was handed to Lang Industries, officially because the SHD-
3H was able to draw upon existing replacement parts stockpiles, but
it ultimately resulted in a win-win situation for both parties.
The SLDF produced few -3Hs, but got the advanced SHD-
2Hb they wanted all along. The Combine protested loudly
about the utter mediocrity of the variant, as well
as the SLDF?s procurement bias against them,
and got their new Dragon into the bargain.
    The few production runs
    of -3Hs were dispersed to
    units in flashpoint areas
    such as along the Lyran-
    Kuritan border and within
    the ever-fractious Taurian
    Concordat. Many ended up in
    the Sixty-Seventh Mechanized Infantry
Division, based on the Combine border world
of Christiania. By feigning a lack of resources,
    the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery
increasingly made the SLDF responsible for
    dealing with bandits and terrorists?or
    those political dissidents and Rasalhague
    secessionists they deemed as such?leaving
the League to carry out the Combine?s dirty
work and carry the butcher?s bill. Likewise,
the -3Hs assigned to the Ninety-Fifth Royal
Jump Infantry Division proved handy on both
    Katinka and New Vandenburg, although
they are viewed as being little more than
the strongarms of a Star League-

Variants:
Surprisingly, the Shadow Hawk -3H was the basis for a variant of
its own, the up-gunned and hot running SHD-3H2. Erroneously referred
to as the -3H itself in some promotional literature, it was the antiinsurgent,
anti-vehicular ?Mech the -3H should have been. Intended for lower-end Terran Hegemony
militias, the -3H2 had a smaller engine,
which enabled the addition of three SRM-4 packs and a pair of small
lasers. Leftover ferro-fibrous armor from the Royal SHD-2Hb program
saved enough mass to mount a pair of versatile grenade launchers. Only
entering limited service just prior to its production lines being destroyed
during the Coup, the -3H2 later provided the inspiration for the Davion
-2D variant, which sacrificed armor instead of maneuverability.

Notable MechWarriors:
Captain Tomas Sokal: Commanding an anti-insurgency company in the
Sixty-Seventh Mechanized Infantry Division?s third regiment, Sokal?s unit
was assigned the two lances of Dragon -1Cs donated to the SLDF for
evaluation purposes: ostensibly being closer to the Combine?s resupply
network. The Dragons provide support at range, with the remaining
lance of -3H Shadow Hawks dealing with threats up close. Well aware
of the larger political battles taking place between the League and
Combine, Sokal has found the company?s composition ironically works
very well. He often finds the ?terrorists? his unit is sent against pause
at the sight of the Dragons, still in Combine colors, before surrendering
to the SLDF Shadow Hawks at the first opportunity.
Flath Ian MacLeod: The commander of a small band of like-minded
Highlanders left in Capellan space, MacLeod refused to return to his
homeworld after Hanse Davion wooed many back to Northwind, with
him and his fellows decrying the returnee?s lack of honor. Granted a
small landhold by a grateful Chancellor-Regent Romano Liao following
the end of the Fourth Succession War, MacLeod and his unit acted as
a beacon for not only those unhappy with Hanse Davion?s political
manipulation of the Highlanders but also those who wished to return
to the Capellan fold. MacLeod?s Shadow Hawk -2H was badly damaged
during the Fourth Succession War, forcing its modification into the -3H
variant, where it would serve him well during the following Andurien War.
Lieutenant Hans Nordström: One of the few survivors of a small
mercenary unit that was destroyed in combat, Nordström traveled to
the Periphery, disillusioned by the Inner Sphere politics that left his
unit unsupported. With the sudden uptick in pirate raids post-Jihad,
Nordström answered the Reaches? call for MechWarriors and joined the
Fronc Cuirassiers in time to help repel several raids. On Rockwellawan
in 3088 when the Calderon Commando came calling, he defended the
Cuirassiers base during the operation to feed false information to the
pirate alliance. Now commissioned to lieutenant, he proudly defends
his new nation in a captured Shadow Hawk -3H.
