Overview:
    The Verstümmeler was an early attempt by the Lyran Commonwealth to create a 'mech.

Capabilities:
    The Verstümmeler carries weaponry that was decent for its time, though it was slightly less
    powerful than the Hegemony's Mackie. Twin LRM-10 racks supplied by three tons of ammuniton
    offered the 'mech the ability to support its allies through indirect fire, while the AC/5
    with one ton of ammunition provided direct fire capability. In close-range combat, the 'mech
    could defend itself with a single medium laser mounted beneath the AC/5, and by bludgeoning
    its foes with its crude, macelike hand actuator, a particular design that would
    independently evolve on the Awesome more than two centuries later. 10 single heat sinks
    allowed the 'mech to fire its LRMS repeatedly without any heat buildup, but would start to
    struggle if the 'mech ran and used its other two weapons The 'mech was able to stagger forth
    at a speed of 54 km/h, and 16.5 tons of primitive armor offered decent armor coverage for
    its time. A noteworthy feature was the 'mech's hunched over posture, which gave it a narrow
    frontal profile that wasn't seen again until the Marauder first rolled off its assembly
    lines.
    
    Innovative as it was, the primitive BattleMech still suffered several glaring flaws that
    would lead to it being phased out down the line. Firstly, the 'mech's torso rotation
    assembly was notoriously fragile, and would often lock in place if the 'mech received a
    griveous blow to its torso. Secondly, the 'mech was slow to accelerate and stop due to its
    suboptimal leg assembly and inefficient gait. Thirdly, the uneven weight distribution meant
    that the 'mech was prone to falling if forced to move through difficult terrain. Lastly was
    its most severe flaw: the leg actuators could not handle the strain of the 'mech's movement
    for prolonged timespans, and would require very frequent maintenance and replacement, or
    else the the 'mech would itself unable to move in the middle of a firefight. The 'mech
    quickly fell out of favor once the technology behind the BattleMechs became better
    understood.

Deployment:
    The exact extent to which the Verstümmeler was deployed is not well-documented, but it has
    been observed in border skirmishes leading up to the proliferation cycle.

Variants:
    None are known, and the Verstümmeler only saw about a few decades of service before being
    phased out and replaced by superior designs.
