Overview:
An experimental mech on the part of the Draconis Combine, the existence and entirely
domestic production wasn't confirmed until this year. Using a hybrid technology base, the
LCT-50C Locust II is derived from the 25 ton Locust IIC 2 and appears to be based on
technical information formerly held by the Nova Cats and reverse engineered from captured
systems. In a way, it can be thought of an original, Clantech mech made by Spherians.
Like the Homeworlds made original Locust IIC, this machine uses a normal 200-class engine.
While that makes it slower than many scout mechs in this era, it is much more survivable and
half the cost. It is built on a less expensive, SLDF and Helm-style endosteel chassis. While
it's bulkier than Clantech endosteel, it has the same weight. The heat sinks are clearly
doubles, but from the venting surfaces and their temperature they appear to be non-Clan.
Even so, it will be nigh impossible to overheat this machine. The electronics are off the
shelf DCMS components. Where it does start to show it's modernized form is the four tons of
Clan spec ferro-fibrous armour. While minimal protection, it's still more protection than
what one would expect. That the Combine is producing it's own Clantech ferro-fibrous means
that in the near future we should expect an upgrade program with this armour for many of
their machines.
The primary weapon is a Clan-style extended range medium laser. It is unsurprising, as the
Nova Cats manufactured their own. Spectral analysis shows it is a different wave length than
actual Clan made models, so it rules out buying them from Clan Sea Fox. That it took this
long for House Kurita to make their own is the surprising part. And again, we should
probably expect an update program in the near future.
The secondary armament is a pair of arm mounted MML-3s. It could be that Clan Streaks are
just outside the dragon's reach, or it could be that the unparalleled versatility of the
MMLs with two tons of ammunition was too tempting. Analysis suggests that the ammunition
tanks are of Clan specification, with integrated CASE.
A sign of the Inner Sphere reaching technological parity with the Clans after a century, the
real question raised by the LCT-50C is why are the publicly debuting these mechs now? The
machine was officially introduced this year, but there are three year old Battleroms of a
machine that was originally thought to be captured and rebuilt from four years ago, that
match the scars on the "new" machine at the debut. Is it a Potemkin mech and the dragon is
lying? Or have they been producing this mech for at least three years. As of yet, it is
unclear even which company produces this, or on which planet. The advancements are not
revolutionary, but evolutionary. Other states have produced more advanced mechs.
But lots of compact and highly protective armour and updated medium lasers by the dropship
load, without going to the Clans, does have serious implications.
Variants:
At this time there are none, but this is also not the first attempt to duplicate the Locust
IIC's 25 ton frame. While no earlier Locust II ever got into serial much less mass
production, the general nomenclature of LCT-10 for the most basic models using pre-Helm
technology, -30 for SLDF/post-helm and -50 for those using better than SLDF but not quite
Clan technology has been consistent.
