Overview:
Developed by the State on the Deep Periphery planet of Kalyxa-5, the Deinonychus DCUS20-E
was designed as a lighter and faster companion to the heavier Giant Rocktopus. Where the
35-ton Giant Rocktopus served as a slow defensive anchor, the Deinonychus was intended to
operate as armored cavalry, screening the flanks of slower vehicles, intercepting enemy
scouts, and closing quickly against ranged units that attempted to keep their distance.

Although only a 20-ton combat vehicle, the Deinonychus carries 7 tons of standard armor,
giving it protection that exceeds many light BattleMechs. This made the vehicle unusually
durable for its size and allowed crews to use it aggressively in the skirmish role. Its
tracked chassis also gave it better battlefield mobility across rough ground than wheeled
cavalry vehicles, while its 120-rated fusion engine allowed it to reach a maximum speed of
97.2 km/h. The use of a fusion engine made the Deinonychus more expensive than a simple
internal-combustion design, but the State considered the cost acceptable for a vehicle
expected to remain deployed for long periods with reduced logistical support.

The Deinonychus mounts three Medium Lasers in a fully rotating turret. This armament gives
the vehicle strong close- to medium-range firepower for its weight, while avoiding the
resupply burden of ammunition-dependent weapons. The lack of long-range firepower is the
vehicle’s main weakness, forcing crews to close with their targets before they can
contribute meaningful damage. Once inside effective range, however, the Deinonychus can
strike repeatedly without concern for ammunition expenditure, making it well suited for
patrols, pursuit actions, rear-area defense, and aggressive counter-skirmishing.

Like the Giant Rocktopus, the Deinonychus includes an insulated internal comfort suite,
though in a smaller 0.5-ton arrangement sized for its two-person crew. This compartment
provides compact reclining crew seats that can serve as rest bunks, stowage for rations and
personal items, a small atmospheric humidity converter for drinking water, and a shared
commode for biological necessities. While cramped, these amenities allow the crew to remain
on alert for extended periods and reduce fatigue during long patrols or dispersed defensive
    deployments.

The Deinonychus was marketed to budget-conscious planetary governments, militias, and
mercenary commands that needed a fast, durable, low-maintenance cavalry vehicle without the
expense of a BattleMech. Though simpler than many advanced State designs, it was built to
the same manufacturing standards as the State’s military vehicles and ’Mechs, giving it
a reputation for reliability and long service life. Paired with the Giant Rocktopus, the
Deinonychus gave poorer commands a practical armored team: one vehicle to hold the line, and
another to move quickly, protect the flanks, and punish enemies that came too close.
