Overview:
The first of the designs promised by the Canoveri - the Clan Wolverine remnants that found
sanctuary in Canopus - to the Centrallas, the Rook is meant to be a cheap but sturdy,
reliable, and capable mech for general use of the MAF.
Capabilities:
The Rook was meant by the Canoveri to be unspectacular. This is because the former
Wolverines thought that a state like the Magistracy whose people despised the military but
needed a capable one with what it has doesn't need a spectacular mech. Just one that's
reliable.
The first production prototype iteration of the Rook, the X001, tries to reflect this
philosophy by relying on tried-and-true technologies at a size that the Magistracy's current
production capabilities can produce. Although the intent was for FUTURE facilities to
produce better versions of the Rook, the X001 was meant to be produced NOW if so needed.
The Rook's main weapon is the reliable Ceres Smasher PPC. While it doesn't have the cooling
jacket of the version the Vindicator carries, it packs the same punch and serves as the long
range striking power of the Rook.
But the mech is not meant to snipe at targets from afar, where bigger, better units might
have more to dish out. Instead, the Rook is expected to steadily close the distance for its
other weapons to work: a pair of Holly SR4 racks and an Intek Medium Laser in the head.
The idea is for the Rook pilot to savage a target with the PPC at range, steadily closing in
as the weapon makes holes. The dual SR4s will then give the MechWarrior the ability to fish
for critical damage.
One drawback is that the SR4s share a single ton of ammo. Thus, the MechWarrior must
carefully husband their shots, unless they are in positions where resupply can be easily
done.
Another is that the X001 can run hot. With only 12 regular heat sinks, it doesn't have
enough to dissipate the heat generated from an alpha strike or from firing the PPC and
jumping full tilt. Pilots of the X001 must always be aware of their heat state.
Deployment:
The X001 Rook was produced in very limited numbers by Majesty Metals. Magestrix Kyalla
Centralla wants to test the machine against opponents better than Periphery raiders so
several mercenary units, including the Wild Hunt, received "test copies" of the Rook-ified
Chameleons.
The units issued to the Wild Hunt come with a stipulation for a bonus if the mech remains
as-is. The mercenary company is known to tailor any mech to its preferred fighting style,
but the Magistracy wants data on the Rook as it stands. As the mech already has jump jets,
the Hunt agreed.
Variants:
The X001 Rook is the "basic" version of the mech, before the Magistracy government and the
Canoveri were sure the Dunianshire facilities will not only come online but will also be
capable of producing some of the more simpler Star League-era technologies. This version can
easily be built at Magistracy Metals, and a couple of prototypes were built on Chameleon
frames as part of its tests.
