Overview:
Design Quirks: Narrow/Low Profile, Difficult to Maintain
Designed by Clan Diamond Shark in the early 3080s, the Atalanta Medium Tank was created as a
premium main battle tank for sale to allies of the clan or use in important second line
formations. The Atalanta is often sold to richer periphery worlds to serve as their premier
combat units in lieu of more expensive Battlemechs. It contains the most advanced
technologies in production at the time of its creation, a ploy by the Diamond Sharks to hook
prospective buyers on the Clan's spare parts and repair services.
The design would go on to inspire Clan Hell's Horses in their Eurus project, although that
vehicle's even more advanced technology would delay its production for decades while the
Atalanta was already the veteran of many-a-conflict.
Capabilities:
The Atalanta was designed to compete with similarly sized Battlemechs, and therefore has to
mitigate the biggest weaknesses of its vehicular frame. Carrying steeply sloped
case-equipped hardened armor, a fusion engine, and an armored motive system; the tank is
resilient against internal explosions and difficult to immobilize. Augmenting these passive
defenses are an array of active defenses, primarily a Virtus Solutions BM-PD-20 laser
anti-missile system and Angel ECM suite.
While carrying a light armament for its size; a Poland Main Model S2 25mm rapid-fire hyper
assault gauss rifle 20, a pintle-mounted Pulsar MK1.1 micro pulse laser, and a Pattern D4s
four-tubed streak short range missile launcher; the Atalanta is effective at most ranges and
against most targets. Its 220XL fusion engine allows it to keep up with front-line
formations, while a light TAG and light active probe allow it to serve as a scout and
spotter should circumstances require.
Trailer hitches mounted front and rear allow damaged vehicles to be easily towed or for the
attachment of utility trailers; trailer that carry anything from ammo, spares, and mobile
field bases to mash equipment, comms gear, or field kitchens.
Variants:
While popular in its base configuration, the technical difficulties in maintenance led to
several field downgrades. While no standard downgrade kit was issued until 3134, the most
common changes were to replace the laser anti missile system with a kinetic one, remove the
armored motive system, replace the HAG with a standard gauss rifle, replace the armor with
ferro-fibrous, and downgrade the ecm suite to a standard one. Others maintain the complexity
but reduce costs by replacing some armor and the 220XL engine with a 165 standard fusion
engine. All such modifications are considered warranty-voiding by the Diamond Sharks, but
they are performed anyways.
Another modification is to replace the 220xl engine with a 275xl engine, while removing the
armored motive system. Clan Sea Fox even issues kits to make this modification. The Clan
also created an official downgrade kit, simply removing some of the more advanced components
to reduce the engine to a standard fusion engine.
Notable MechWarriors:
The Paran Civil Defense Cooperative, with Paran's proximity to the Chaine Cluster, procured
several of these tanks in 3104. Eventually seeing combat in the endless wars of the
Chainelane Isles, it proved as popular amongst crews as it was unpopular with mechanics.
Easy access to Clan Sea Fox, just two jumps away, led to enough spare parts to prevent
downgrade kits from being issued, and the PCCC is one of the few military organizations
which maintain a large number of unmodified Atalanta tanks.
