Overview:
For many years, the Shadow Hawk has been accepted as a good line soldier, capable of filling
many roles. While not very strong by itself, its ability to contribute to virtually any
situation has made it a favored unit in both house and mercenary units. However, when the
'Mech was first created, it suffered a bad reputation due to its armor plating sometimes
severing key myomer bundles during combat. For that reason, few mourned the loss of this
original model, and knowledge of its abilities was lost to history...until now.
Capabilities:
While not the first model of the Shadow Hawk (the primitive SHD-1R has that distinction),
the SHD-2R was the model to be upgraded with what would become standard 'Mech engines, armor
and other equipment. This version would also become known for the issues noted above with
its armor.
Like the primitive SHD-1R Shadow Hawk, the 2R does not move as fast as its later models,
with its 220 fusion engine giving the 'Mech a top speed of only some 65 kph. This is
somewhat mitigated with the inclusion of 3 jump jets, which allow it to clear obstacles up
to 30 meters high or 90 meters wide. The design also replaced the original 14 tons of
primitive BattleMech armor with 10 tons of now standard plate. Although this was less mass
of armor, it actually ended up providing even more protection to the 'Mech.
All of these changes freed up considerable mass in the design, which was used to improve the
firepower of the older model machine. A Type 10 heavy autocannon replaced the Type 5 medium
autocannon. This more massive cannon lacked the range of the smaller model autocannon, but
doubled the impact force on its targets. The mass savings also allowed for the magazine
capacity to be doubled, which ended up providing the same number of shots to the weapon as
the original autocannon. Knowing that the design had lost its former edge in long range
weaponry, a 10 pack of long-range missiles was added to the right shoulder, and two tons of
ammunition allow for 4 minutes of continual fire. The design also maintained the right arm
mounted medium laser, long considered to be one of the best designed weapons of all time.
Deployment:
The SHD-2R Shadow Hawk won great favor when it was first introduced, but within a few years,
it had lost all of that favor when knowledge of the issues with its armor plating became
known. Earthworks had tied up so many resources in the design that it nearly went bankrupt
when it began losing sales of the design. Knowing they needed to fix this, they went back to
the drawing board and in 2550, they introduced the definitive version, the SHD-2H. This
model would go on to serve in virtually every military in the Inner Sphere and Periphery.
