Overview:
The HBK-4GX, while seeming radical, is not a major departure from the original Hunchback
ethos: the enormous primary weapon remains, as do the laser back-ups. The majority of the
Jihad era upgrades were designed to give the design superior capabilities within it's
established mission profile. The decision to remove all ammunition dependency from the
Hunchback's arsenal gives this model a battle stay it had hitherto lacked, but at the cost
of some of it's punch and close range accuracy.
Capabilities:
As the Heavy PPC with a Capacitor had a significantly higher heat output than the old
autocannon, designers were forced to upgrade the heat sinks to double rate and add an extra
one in order to avoid the serious overheating issues incurred with the design. Designers
saved weight, apart from replacing the AC/20 with a lighter Heavy PPC, by upgrading the
Hunchback's armor to ferro-fibrous, enabling them to upgrade the small laser in the 'mech's
head to two medium X-Pulse lasers in the arms, install CASE for the capacitor and armour
several of the 'Mechs weakest and most vulnerable components. Additionally, an advanced
Targeting computer was added, often much to the annoyance of the loyal 'old school'
Hunchback pilots who preferred to aim over 'iron sights'. Lastly, if the HBK-4GX is forced
to run and fire all of its weapons for 9 turns without charging the capacitor, the Triple
Strength Myomer is activated which further increases its potency in the field.
Deployment:
The long-range, high damage and accurate punch that the HBK-4GX delivers makes it a superb
fire-support 'mech, a role the old Hunchback could have never fulfilled. The by then
ancient HBK-4G Hunchbacks attached to garrison regiments were generally left unmodified,
while Hunchbacks in the front line divisions of the brand new 1st Andurien Rangers were
widely upgraded to the new standard. The secondary name of this 'Mech is in honour of its
heavy use in the Rangers, who were nicknamed 'The Eagles'.
