Overview:
    The TDR-5A Thunderbolt is a monkey variant of the basic TDR-5S intended for sale to local
    militias mercenaries, minor noble houses and export to periphery powers.
    
    The market for such a popular machine remained nearly insatiable through the years, but with
    the Succession Wars raging on the Earthwerks Incorporated lines were incapable to keep the
    production numbers high enough. After a year of debates among Liaos, company leaders, R&D
    and marketing a compromise solution was found and first licenses for the 5A were sent to
    various smaller companies.

Capabilities:
    Working with damaged chassis that are usually sent to the factory for repairs, the designers
    decided to demove some of the often damaged sub-systems, namely the bulky Sunglow laser,
    machine guns and heat dissipation units and installed a light autocannon and flamer in their
    place. The overal loss of firepower isn't that dramatic, but otherwise the 5A Thunderbolt is
    identical to it's more famous 5S brother. As a bonus the autocannon's constant need for ammo
    greatly pleases weapon producers across the sphere, especially the Capellan economy starved
    by isolation welcomed even the opportunity to sell more of it's products, because licensed
    manufacturers are under state directive to equip their products with non-standard caliber
    weapons. A practice quickly adopted by many even out of Liao controlled space.

Deployment:
    The TDR-5A Thunderbolt is a rare sight in militaries of the great houses, but local militias
    and mercenaries dependent on Capellan are as likely to field the 5A as they are to have one
    of the regular 5S models. As the fate would have it the 5A manufacturing lines are the only
    ones that remained in Capellan hands after the Tikonov Free Republic was formed in 3031.
    Capellan Confederation eventually managed to retool some of the minor production lines to
    produce the 5S again for CCAF within 5 years, but this transitional period also saw an
    emergence of a new variant, the 5B.

Variants:
    TDR-5B Thunderbolt originated as a modification of the 5A intended for long exchanges with
    the enemy and siege operations. One heat sink and the SRM launcher are dropded in favour of
    one ton of AC ammo and two tons of missiles. This 'Mech is ill-suited for close range
    fighting due to the amount of ammo it carries, but it can provide a long lasting support and
    it can hold it's own against machines that manage to get through the barrage.
