Overview:
Internal Security Force Report, June 4th 3059:
This modified Raven RVN-3L, nicknamed "Psychopomp," is a scout commander for the
re-constituted 5th North Star Free Company, piloted by Lieutenant Lars Aamodt. Officially,
it is a Raven with its NARC missile beacon replaced with an ER Large Laser and heat sinks
upgraded to double, as per the unit's official statements on the matter, as of March 3059.
Observations of the system in the field reveal their statement on its capabilities to be a
lie by omission.
A DEST unit attached to the Second Sword of Light encountered this Raven on Hyner in May of
3059 on two separate occasions. In both cases, it was operating near the scouting elements
of the Ninth Com Guards. The 5th North Star Free Company, officially, was not contracted
for Operation BULLDOG, providing cause for concern. However, in both encounters, the Raven
was clearly working in conjunction with friendly forces.
Combat observers noted that the Raven did not fire any SRMs during an engagement with Smoke
Jaguars, despite the unit appearing to have one installed at a glance. They noted that the
normal Medium Lasers were replaced with Medium Pulse Lasers and appeared to have employed
jump jets. Analysis of its ECM signature is suspiciously similar to the experimental
"Angel" ECM system currently in field trials with the DCMS.
In the second encounter, Aamodt alerted the DEST unit to multiple hidden minefields.
However, while the minefields were found to be genuine, the Raven appeared to spot them from
beyond the range of a Beagle Active Probe. They were unable to ascertain whether it was
fitted with a Clan Active Probe, or a improved model of Inner Sphere origin, possibly the
ComStar "Bloodhound" project. It was observed firing an ER Small Laser in addition to the
other weapons during the encounter. It was last seen using its TAG to spot for the Second
Sword of Light's artillery support. The only other related encounter was a scrap of its
armor. It was standard armor rather than the ferro-fibrous armor typical of a RVN-3L. This
would imply that they reworked the internal structure to be made of Endo-Steel rather than
by lightening the armor plating to make the additional gear fit.
In the field, it was in a low visibility paint scheme, fitting the covert nature of its
deployment. Images of its mercenary livery, however, show an interesting detail. On the
right nose of the 'Mech is an insignia of three colored strands, one blue, one black, one
white, being severed in a single stroke by a raven's claw. This design is suggestive of him
having spent time as a bondsman for one of the clans, most likely Ghost Bear given the
coloration of the cords and the 5th Company's history with the Ghost Bears.
Capabilities:
The Psychopomp is observed to have the following systems based on spectral analysis of
recorded data:
ER Large Laser: photon frequency matches the Diverse Optics Sunbeam
2x Medium Pulse Laser: photon and pulse frequencies match the Tronel XII
ER Small Laser: photon frequency matches the Magna Mk IV
ECM Suite: strength and modulation matches Angel ECM, giving it double the ECM/ECCM
capabilities of a standard Guardian ECM.
Active Probe: Range suggests a Bloodhound Active Probe (Speculative)
TAG: Most likely an Apple Churchill 442x, given that it is a Raven.
Jump Jets: Exhaust spectra suggests Luxor Load Lifters.
Deployment:
The Psychopomp appears unchanged in the usual role as a forward observer, though it
sacrifices its ability to provide NARC missile guidance and its SRM capabilities in favor of
better sustained firepower. The (probably) improved active probe and jump jets give it an
unparalleled ability to slip through gaps in minefields, all while being protected from low
levels of ECCM due to its Angel ECM.
Variants:
Given its nature as a personalized one-off, variants of the design are deemed unlikely for
the near future, though it is plausible that the weapons will be replaced with Clan spec
equivalents if the ComGuards allowed the 5th to take any salvage.
