Overview:
    The awkward bigger brother of the Beetle and predecessor to the Paul, the SRB-38A "Scarab
    38" started as an attempt to modify the Beetle to carry greater firepower at a slight cost
    of speed. The resulting mess of design documents and prototypes is one of the first and best
    examples of why and how the R&D department gained its modern day notoriety as the project's
    scope was inflated and features kept being added, resulting in a wheeled tank twice the
    weight of the original Beetle and with about as many times the firepower.
    
    Regrettably, the 'slight' cost of speed became a significant one as the end results barely
    passed the minimum requirements set for the project. This, along with its unlikely origins
    and unwieldy nature compared to the Beetle earned the Scarab a negative reputation among
    troops who nicknamed it the 'Slothbug' and often saw it as an inferior option to the proven
    effects of the Beetle.
    
    Where the Scarab did find success, however, was among upper staff and commanders who had
    long desired a slow and steady unit with a heavy punch that could project influence over the
    battlefield from a safe distance without needing a proverbial babysitter to keep it safe
    from approaching hostiles. With the medium lasers mounted separate from the PPC and a fair
    amount of armor on all sides, the Scarab became a hidden favorite among commanders who would
    simply position a small group at a vantage point and rarely have to worry about them again,
    save for target selection.

Capabilities:
    The SRB-38A "Scarab 38" is a sniper with elements of a brawler. It has enough speed to get
    where it needs to be and enough firepower to protect itself from harassers and other light
    units. That said, it is a unit meant to provide supporting fire first and foremost and thus
    should be primarily used to supplement the firepower of heavier frontline units. Similarly,
    it is not able to hold a flank by itself but given a good position, it can provide fire
    support on multiple fronts.

Deployment:
    The SRB-38A "Scarab 38" is ideally fielded in larger conflicts with many units. Effectively
    a small force multiplier, a battery of three can prove devastating against heavy targets at
    a fairly cheap cost while also being able to effectively neutralize fast-movers who slip
    through the gaps. Thanks to its decent armor, it is also able to survive one or two hits
    from even the heaviest of enemy counter-battery fire fairly reliably, though it is not
    advised to leave the Scarab exposed to such firepower for long.

Variants:
    The Scarab 38 SRB-38 has two variants.
    
    The first is the SRB-38A which is described above.
    
    The second is the SRB-38CV which is a Command Vehicle variant, replacing the PPC with an
    LRM15 that has two tons of ammo and uses the remaining space for seven tons of communication
    equipment that allows for ECCM and the generation of ghost targets. This variant is still
    regularly fielded despite its age thanks to availability and its simple design.

Notable MechWarriors:
    None; even if a vehicle crew did attain fame, it would only be in the territories of the
    Blackshield Company and thus of no significance to the major powers.
