Overview:
Inspired by the Free World's League's Eris battlemechs, Giovanni Weller, who had recently
inherited his father's immense fortune, decided to start his own Deluxe Battlemech
manufacturer. Their first product was the Sandalphon, a 55 ton cavalry mech inspired by the
Eris, but crafted with in-house components by the artisan engineers and technicians hired by
Giovanni and held to the highest quality.
Visually, the Sandalphon resembles a sleek Eris with legs akin to a much sleeker penetrator
and a much more angular head.
Capabilities:
With a unique partial wing design that took inspiration from Aerospace fighters, having both
flaps and ailerons, and including Archangel Deluxe's new Omnidirectional jump jets, the
Sandalphon had a greater range of movement than most other mechs, able to dart through the
air like a hummingbird. The leg construction also helped enable this greater degree of
movement, however, it also necessitated removing some of the protection that the actuators
normally have, leaving the leg actuators susceptible to infantry and battle armor attacks.
The diverse armaments of the Sandalphon allow it to engage a number of targets competently.
The deadly plasma rifle was chosen to counter infantry and hot-running battlemechs, while
the Large Pulse Laser was chosen for its deadly accuracy and high damage at close range. The
Streak SRM 4 was introduced to exploit the openings in armor created by the main weapons.
Worried about large amounts of missile fire, the a Laser AMS system was installed to defend
the Sandalphon from all sorts of fiery darts. Pilots all over have sing praises to the easy
and intuitive controls of the mech, making it exceptionally easy to pilot. Because of the
exceptional engineering of the design, it also had a much more extensive torso twist, able
to fire directly behind it.
Deployment:
The Sandalphon was first deployed by the Asphalt Angels, a mercenary company specializing in
urban and anti-clan warfare. They were contracted by Archangel Deluxe Mechwerks to test the
prototype Sandalphon in combat. They did this by launching a daring raid onto the Jade
Falcon capitol of Sudeten, declaring a Batchall for several mech's worth of Clan Endosteel.
The opening engagement of this battle was devastating for the Angels, with almost a lance of
mechs being effectively defeated in less than a minute. The Angels turned the Batchall into
a running battle amongst the snowy plains of Sudeten. Sadly for Gabriel Seraf, who was
piloting the Sandalphon, the cold environment of Sudeten wreaked havoc on the targeting
computer, making hitting anything at medium or long range extremely difficult. With the
Angel's slowly being worn down, Gabriel daringly jumped behind the Falcon Commander, so
close that his faulty targeting couldn't effect him, he launched an Alpha Strike against the
falcon, destroying the Mech. This shifted the momentum of the battle, allowing the Angel's
to emerge victorious, and allowing them to salvage their fallen mechs, the enemy clan mechs,
and emerged from the raid with a very profitable amount of Endosteel.
After the success of this raid, and fixing the targeting system's issues, the first
production run of the Sandalphon was a resounding success. While most of their customers
were mercenaries and minor house lords, the Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey purchase a company of
mechs, and deseminated them amongst some of their veteran pilots. During one attack by the
Marian Hegemony, a pair of Sandalphons were on planet. They, along with a pair of
Hunchbacks, held a canyon that prevented the Marion advance. The Hunchbacks weathered
attacks from the Marions, while the Sandalphons flanked them, dealing devastating damage.
Because of this delaying action, reinforcements arrived to defend the nearby settlements.
Only one of the Sandalphons survived this delaying action, but the other had 6 confirmed
mech kills before being taken down.
Variants:
After a number of requests for the maneuverable chassis to be turned into a long ranged
sniper, Archangel Deluxe Mechwerks created the SND-T1-PHN. The core of the design was the
Heavy PPC, a powerful ranged weapon that could hit as hard as a Clan ER PPC, and the
Targeting computer, enabling it to hit more accurately at range. These were backed up by an
LRM 10 with 1 ton of ammunition and a Medium Laser. Also included was the somewhat derided
Improved One Shot SRM 2. Arnold Hargon, the technician who originally suggested attaching it
to the mech, recommended that MechWarriors use specialized ammo in the launchers to get the
optimal effect. This variant was as well received as the A1, though critics noted it's
loadout was very similar to that of the venerable Griffin.
After the successful launch of the Quasimodo, Archangel Deluxe Mechwerks was inspired to use
the Blue Shield PFD, creating the SND-B1-PHN. This allowed the mech to survive powerful PPC
blasts, making it an excellent sniper killer. In order to make room for the blue shield, the
mech replaced all of the on board systems except for the Large Pulse lasers, replacing it
with the simple yet powerful Binary Laser and a single-shot Rocket Launcher 10. This allows
the mech to deal significantly more damage to a single location, though the extra heat often
causes the mech to overheat. All the same, the variant was well received, though it was
subjected to customization far more than either of the other two variants.
Developed as per request of the Magistracy of Canopus, and alongside several Magistracy
engineers, the SND-M3-PHN was created to increase redundancy at short range while also using
the versatile MML 9 System to support other units and send forth devastating SRM barrages.
This variant would go on to see some success inside the Magistracy, to the point where
Majesty Metals offered to buy production rights to the B3. The offer was rejected, Archangel
citing quality assurance concerns, as all Sandalphon battlemechs were held to an exceedingly
high standard. The instead offered to build a facility inside of the Magistracy, and are
currently in talks to do so.
Notable MechWarriors:
Captain Gabriel Seraf was the third son of the founder of the Asphalt Angels, Micael Seraf.
Born in 3082 he was the youngest child of Micael. As such, his older brother, Arthur Seraf
inherited his Father's Warhammer IIc, and his sister Ruth Seraf inherited their childless
Uncle's Crusader. Gabriel was left without a mech of his own until he was chosen as the test
warrior of the Sandalphon. His performance during the raid on Sudeten gained him a promotion
to Captain, and using some of the clan Endosteel, clan ferro-fibrous, and clan salvage from
the raid, he was given a custom Sandalphon SND-A1-PHN with clan technology. The Large Pulse
Laser, LAMS, and Partial Wing were all replaced with clan equivalents. The medium laser was
removed, and the Streak 4 was swapped for a clan SRM-6 pack. The most important upgrade
however, was the Clan Targeting Computer, which was including as a joking apology for the
faulty system on Sudeten. He named his mech "Revelation" which became his callsign. He used
this in several notable engagements on behalf of the Asphalt Angels, eventually becoming the
Commander of Rapier Lance, the most elite duelists in the Asphalt Angels. During the defense
of a Lyran world in 3112, he engaged the Star Captain of the attacking Jade Falcon force,
who was piloting a new Gyrfalcon, in a duel. The two highly manuevearble mechs fought across
hills and buildings, exchanging shots and blasting away armor. Eventually, Gabriel savaged
the Gyrfalcon's partial wing enabling him to outflank and destroy the mech. He emerged
victorious, but heavily damaged, after defeating the Elite MechWarrior in the brand new
falcon design.
Gillis Dimitriev was a professional figure skater in the former Free World's League, a local
celebrity. When the blackout occurred, his world seemed unaffected, until Pirates struck his
world, slaughtering a significant portion of the population, including his own family. He
used the fortune he had amassed from his years of figure skating to purchase a Sandalphon
SND-A1-PHN and hired a veteran MechWarrior to train him. After just 3 years of training, he
went hunting the pirates who attacked his world. Eventually, he learned that they were Lyran
backed "Mercenaries" posted along the Lyran border. He hired a merchant to smuggle him and
his mech to the planet, where he emerged from the dropship and fought his way to the Lyran
Merc's base, slaughtering all inside. His mech seemed to dance like he used to when he was a
figure skater. He killed every mercenary, and by the end of his rampage he had 3 confirmed
mech kills. He destroyed the remaining 5 mechs before they could be started up, and by the
time Lyran reinforcements had arrived, the MechWarrior was gone and the base was nothing
more than rubble. After learning about his identity locals began to call him "Swansong", a
name which he later adopted as his callsign. He fought against the Lyrans and Wolves during
operation Hammerfall and joined the reformed FWL Military when the League was forged anew.
In 3142, he was tasked with holding back a company of Lyrans from making their way across a
wide expanse of flatlands. He and his Lance performed hit and run attacks, his enemies
unable to hit his graceful mech, but slowly his Lance was picked apart till only he
survived. He then lived up to his callsign, giving one last beautiful and deadly
performance. During their hit and run attacks, his Lance was able to take down 3 Lyran
mechs. During his final dance, he got a further 5 kills and crippled another. When League
reinforcements finally arrived, they saw a Lyran Gauss Rifle shatter the remnants of
Swansong's Sandalphon. He was posthumously inducted into the Atreus Hall of Heroes.
Irito Aoki was a Draconis Combine MechWarrior who piloted a SND-T1-PHN Sandalphon, serving
as a sniper in a light company of the 5th Sword of Light. During the conquest of New Avalon,
his company found itself cut off by 2nd Robinson Rangers, engaging much heavier mechs. After
their commander was cut down, Aoki took command, organizing a defense as he maneuvered
around the battlefield, using his Targeting Computer and excellent skill to headshot several
of the Robinson heavy mechs, buying his company enough time that reinforcements from the
Wolf's Dragoons could arrive to chase off the remaining Rangers. While only about 7 of the
Sword of Light mechs survived, it was all thanks to his skill, courage, and dedication under
fire. He was quickly appointed Tai-I of his company, and it was replenished to full strength
by the survivors of another company of the 5th Sword of Light. He competently led this
company to success, but after the conquest of New Avalon he and his company were transfered
to the Dominion-Combine border, where they fought against the Rasalhague Dominions invasion.
Reports say Tai-I Aoki Irito survived the invasion, though his whereabouts are unknown.
