Overview:
All data and fluff imported from Battletech: Wars of Grievance (TRO) by Steve Cross.

The Lucanus or, as it was more commonly known Stag Beetle is a rather rare example of the
Quad Mech design used by the Clans. A bare handful of quadruped designs were ever made by
the Clans and were uncommon sights within the Homeworlds, the Lucanus broke the mould.
Designed by the Scientists of Clan Burrock as a TotemMech the Mech was designed to not use
strategic resources first and be a Totem second.
This meant that sacrifices would have to be made in terms of ground speed, but despite being
a quadrupedal design which were usually lambasted for a lack of internal space, the newly
designed 70-ton Mech had ample internal space for a wide range of weapons.
Because the Burrocks were a resource poor Clan and had few orbital facilities where
Endo-Steel or Ferro- Fibrous armour could be made. With XL engines reserved for OmniMechs
the new Mech?s only ?extravagance? was the Endo-Steel skeleton, which was draped in 14.5
tons of Standard armour plating, letting it carry the maximum amount of armour the 70-ton
chassis could support. The 280 rated M-661 fusion reactor provided ample power, but ground
speed was a rather adequate 64kph. The Mech designers paid considerable attention to
improving the usually rough ride provided by a quad design. Instead of having the legs fixed
to the corners of the hull like the ancient Scorpion BattleMech, or held under the hull like
the Snow Fox and Thunder Stallion, the newer design used a ?floating body? type design that
was far more flexible and offered greater stability on rough terrain. It also reduced the
Mech?s profile, making it a harder target at longer ranges. The Mech?s splayed and ?claw?
like feet also helped the Mech climb rough terrain and pilots, expecting a rough ride were
surprised at how comfortable the Mech was even when at full speed across rough
    terrain.

Capabilities:
The choice of an Endo-Steel skeleton was seen as counterproductive in light of the Mech
consuming as few strategic resources as possible. However, Endo-Steel offers greater weight
savings, and if a Mech had Ferro-Fibrous armour, this would have to be repaired after every
battle, consuming more resources over time. If a Mech?s skeleton was damaged, then the
armours already destroyed and would need replacing anyway.
Built for long to mid-range engagements, the Lucanus?s primary armament was a pair of ER
Large Lasers mounted in ?horns? near the Mech?s head. Between these, mounted on a
semi-retractable mountings that lowered into the Mech?s upper back was an LB 10-X
autocannon, a potent and flexible weapon system. For shorter range firepower the Lucanus
relied in an SRM-6 and ER Medium Laser, with a head mounted Flamer provided anti-infantry
protection. Fifteen double heatsinks kept the Mech running cool but alpha strikes still made
    a notable heat spike.

Deployment:
Because of its ease of production the Lucanus was produced in considerable numbers and many
would face the Clans during the Trial of Annihilation of Clan Burrock. Because of its
?tainted? history, all surviving Lucanus were broken down and destroyed.

Variants:
The Burrocks would go on to develop three versions of the Mech, the first was a long range
support unit, replacing the autocannon with a pair of LRM-15?s, although rather poor firing
arcs for the missile launchers and a notable heat spike when using both ER Large Lasers and
LRM?s made this variant somewhat unpopular. Short range firepower was bolstered though with
the addition of another ER Medium Laser.

The Lucanus 3 was the most advanced version and deployed in the Burrock?s Command Keshik?s
and Alpha Galaxy. Armed identically to the standard version with the dual ER Large Lasers
and autocannon, the Lucanus 3 was notably faster thanks to its 300 rated XL engine which
allowed it to reach speeds in excess of 80kph. Due to their XL engines though these versions
were rather rare and it is believed that no more than fifty were made.
