Overview:
By 3000, the remaining two dozen or so SCP-1N Scorpion BattleMechs in the Taurian Defense
Force armory were on the verge of being condemned for scrap. Age, hard useage, and battle
damage had rendered all of these 'Mechs with at least a few malfunctioning components--some
were in such a state of disrepair that they could no longer move under their own power.
Needing every BattleMech they could possibly field for the current expansion program of the
TDF, the leaders of the Defense Force met with represenatives from Vandenberg Mechanized
Industries in August of 3000 on New Vandenberg. The military officers and industrialists
discussed the problem with the Concordat's Scorpions in detail over a two-week long series
of meetings. VMI execs proposed a radical plan to bring each of the existing Scorpions to
New Vandenberg and there restore and rebuild the 'Mechs to an almost new condition.
The problem with that plan was two-fold: first, there was not a single factory in the
Concordat that produced the VOX 330 fusion engine of the SCP-1N Scorpion, and second, there
was the general dislike--bordering on hatred--for the punishing rough ride of the 'Mech by
TDF MechWarriors.
VMI, however, suggested a solution to both problems. Lacking the VOX 330, they proposed
instead to use Core Tek 275 engine cores from their GRF-1N Griffin production instead.
Although this would reduce the Scorpions maximum speed from 97.2 to 86.4 kilometers per
hour, it would also free up a massive amount of tonnage for additional weapon systems and
armor.
The second problem VMI hoped to address through a cockpit redesign that would incorporate
features commonly found in small craft and light DropShips--but not usually seen on a
BattleMech.
Intriqued by the proposals, the TDF officials authorized VMI to begin work on four SCP-1Ns
that were currently inoperable. Three years later, the first quartest of SCP-1Ts walked
from the VMI Factory Prime on New Vandenberg on their own power
Capabilities:
Switching from the 330 VOX to the 275 Core Tek not only slowed the maximum ground speed of
the Taurian Scorpions, but also saved ten full tons of weight (nine from the engine and one
from a smaller gyroscope). While preparing to install the new engine and gyro, VMI
engineers dismantled the 'Mechs down to the original internal structure skeletons, removing
all wiring, piping, weaponry, electronics, and cooling systems.
Stressed IS frames were removed and replaced with custom-built (often hand-built)
replacement members, and all joints and load-bearing frames were surveyed for
micro-fractures and any signs of weakness. As VMI began to reassemble the Scorpions using
all new components, they incorporated twelve shock absorbers into the legs of the
'Mech--three in each. Normally used for heavy cargo-carrying wheeled ground vehicles,
these massive systems were intended to dampen the rocking and vibrations that pilots
assigned to a Scorpion constantly complained about. While a very low-tech solution that
would require nearly constant maintenance, the shock absorbers worked, reducing the bounce
and hard impacts normally experienced when riding in one of these BattleMechs.
With the vast amounts of space freed up by the replacement of the engine and gryo, the
design team next added the reworked cockpit. Featuring a bubble-type canopy that protruded
from the upper skeletal members, the cockpit was a seperate self-contained sub-system. The
outer surfaces of the cockpit pod were attached to the IS frames by conventional means of
welding and bracing, but the true innovation of VMI was to be found within the cockpit
shell. Here, the design team included a three-way gimbal mount that allowed the
MechWarrior and all of his cockpit equipment to pitch, yaw, and roll irrespective of the
BattleMechs normal orientation. Often seen on lighter weight DropShips and aerospace small
craft, this system keeps the pilot relatively stable, regardless of what his craft might do.
Combined with an additional array of shock absorbers and a limiter on the range of motion
allowed, the new cockpit and the leg-mounted shock absorbers previously installed virtually
eliminated the extremely rough ride experienced by all Scorpion pilots prior.
The cockpit also included the latest Mark XVIc ejection system that blasted the entire pod
clear of the 'Mech when activated, reducing pilot injury during the ejection process.
Turning their attention to the weapon systems, VMI decided to change both the systems
themselves and their arrangement. Replacing the Anderson Armaments PPC was a modern
Martin-Gordan Lance Large Laser; this was also moved from the right torso to the center
torso--placed directly beneath the cockpit pod, in fact. Although capable of generating
less raw damage and range than the original PPC, this substitution freed up two additional
tons of mass that VMI subsequently used for additional weapons and cooling systems.
Instead of the Marvel Six-Load SRM-6 launch
Deployment:
Assigned to medium-weight units on an as-needed basis, the fourteen SCP-1Ts currently in
service are not expected to gain any additional converts over the next few years. However,
there are rumors that VMI is negotiating with Brigadier for the rights to locally produced
the -1Ts on New Vandenberg, in exchange for the schematics and production rights for several
exclusively Taurian 'Mech designs.
Variants:
Itself a variant of a rare 'Mech, there are no known examples of a modified SCP-1T Scorpion.
Notable MechWarriors:
Captain William Halas is the pilot of a Scorpion named 'The Deadly Sting' that is currently
attached to Echo Company of the 2nd Battalion, Hyades Light Infantry. Halas is an emigre
from the Free Worlds League, which he was forced to flee after he killed a close relative of
Captain General Marik in a duel. Joining the TDF after his arrival, Halas has rapidly risen
in rank and today commands Echo Company. His Scorpion-T is one of the larger and more
powerful designs in the fast-moving and light-weight Hyades Light Infantry.

The Scorpion-1N has several problems: heat, armor, few weapons. The downrating of the engine solved all of them. It's weapon load is diverse. Maybe a bit too diverse.

I can't help but to compare this to my Hyena design, wich I like a lot. This thing is tough and packs quite a puch among it's many relatively light weapons. Large laser gives it some sting thoug. Limited field of fire will be often fealt so be careful where you stand. Hyeana was meant to be unleashed upon wounded heavies to finish them off and received JJs to approach from wherever it wants, but this brawler needs team-mates to cover it's back while trying to chew through someone's armour. I'd hesitate to get within 3 hexes of anything with this for loosing initiative could quickly rob me of the opportunity to ruin someone's day with all those weapons. It's great quad, but I'd think twice before picking it for a duel or in small sized teams. I can see it acting without any trouble in anything from lance up though. Nice origin story too!
