A solid refit of the design! You've kept the strengths of the Mauler and eliminated many of its difficulties: weak armor, XL engine and lack of short range punch. Like others have suggested, my only quibble is the CT ammo. Overall a good (and far less expensive) variant of a personal favorite design! |

An extensive refit indeed, but I'm not sure whether it helped. If the ACs were meant to provide with concentrated firepower better than the LRMs then they fail to achieve that, since the LRMs also group the damage to 5pt groups. I don't consider that to be a flaw actually, since the refit makes the Mauler better at what it was supposed to be doing. Raining fire on the enemy from afar while not receiving too much undue attention. With heavier armour and standard engine the enemy is more likely to prefer targets armed with PPCs and gauss rifles, which may give the MAL-ZR the time to go through it's beefy ammo bay. The medium lasers are sufficient for backup and as short range protection, but I think that you won't need rely on them too often with all the ammo. A C3 slave would be a great complement to Mauler's sniping abilities IMO (replacement for the CT ammo?). A solid 'Mech that deserves some good rating. |

I've always liked the Mauler--this version is pretty cool. If I may make a few comments, however: First, dump the CT ammo and move the head mounted medium laser to that location; now you have twin ML's firing rear. Second, for that one ton left, how about a C3 slave? Mounted in the head. After all, it is a Draconis 'Mech.
You have to watch your heat in this 'Mech--LRM and UAC's produce 14 plus movement, medium lasers produce 12 or 18 plus movement. You only get into problems when you try to fire both at the same time. I'd take one, even with the LRM ammo in the CT, but consider what I've said. |
