Overview:
First debuting in 2840, the Lightning was at that time the only native designed heavy
BattleMech available to the Taurian Defense Force. Fleet of foot, the Lightning boasted a
powerful assortment of weapons as well, and an extremely thick shell of protective armor.
The design proved complementary to the Archers, Thunderbolts, and Warhammers whose designs
had been stolen from the Star League years before. But the Lightning shined best when
deployed as the command 'Mechs of cavalry strike lances. In continous production for nearly
200 years, the Lightning represents the ingenuity and tenacity of the Taurian people.
Capabilities:
With a maximum ground speed of 83.2 kilometers per hour, the Lightning moves more like a
scout 'Mech than a heavy. Though lacking jump jets, the Martin-Gordan White Lightning PPC
alleviates a pressing need for such extreme mobility. The weapon is placed in an arm mount
very similar to that of the Hellfire, allowing the MechWarrior piloting a Lightning to fire
forward, backwards, and to the right, as well as both up and down. In fact, the MechWarrior
has a three-hundred degree arc of fire with the arm-mounted PPC. Twin Aurora Missiliers
Foxglove SRM-4 launchers are mounted one each in the right and left torso. Both launchers
are provided with their own ammunition supply--one ton each. Finally, two Martin-Gordan
Rapier medium lasers are mounted in the center torso. Twelve heat sinks provide adequete
heat dissipation capacity, though the MechWarrior piloting the Lightning must be careful to
to fire too many weapons simultaneously.
Deployment:
The Lightning is rather ubiquitous in Taurian service. Virtually all units will possess one
or more of the dependable, rugged, war machines. However, the design has never been approved
for export.
Variants:
The LTN-2A replaces both Foxglove SRM-4 launchers and their ammo with two A/M Privet LRM-5
launchers and two tons of ammunition. Though this design possesses exceptional ranged
weapons, it overheats even more easily than the primary model. The -3A replaces one Foxglove
SRM-4 and ammo with one Privet LRM-5 and ammo, providing a balanced blend of long- and
short-range firepower.
Notable MechWarriors:
The Lightning has participated in many skirmishes during its long service with the TDF. On
23 March, 3022, Captain Thomas Gates was piloting his LTN-3A Lightning ('Barbara Ann') on
routine patrol of the wastes of the world Badland. Ambushed by a lance of Davion raiders,
the used his 'Mech superior speed to evade the enemy, then harrassed them while
reinforcements rushed to his posistion. Captain Gates performed hit and run attacks against
the Davion's for twenty minutes before a flight of four 'Mechbuster fighters from a local
airbase arrived on scene. Carrying heavy loads of inferno bombs, the 'Mechbusters made a
fast pass, napalming the entire valley where Captain Gates led his foes. Narrowly escaping
the napalm, Captain Gates made his way to top of a ridge, and began sniping at the helpless
shutdown 'Mechs below. By the time his reinforcements arrived, all four of the Davion 'Mechs
had been disabled and their pilots killed.

Tehee... what the FLF-3K Flail (my design posted a little while ago) could be, if it had been heavier. The lightning is a well ballanced unit with tough hide. It may not have the firepower of the other heavies, but it clearly outclasses both the Kuritan Dragon and the SLDF Champion, and I think that neither of the OST series 'Mechs could outshine it. The closest concurrent would be the Grand Dragon IMO.
Good work!
P.S. I think that you can't perform the arm flip with only one arm.

Incredibly versatile design, with enough speed for a striker/raider role, but also enough armor and firepower to use as a brawler or assault unit. This unit has two good weapon/heat sink brackets; at long range, it can run at full speed if necessary and fire its PPC with no heat buildup. At close range it needs to cycle its weapons every couple of rounds in order to keep its heat under control, but it has enough head dissipation capacity to maintain a constant offensive posture AND remain mobile.
The only half-point demerit I'm giving this design is for the two tons of SRM ammo. I think the extra ton just increases the design's vulnerability to an ammunition explosion. Overall though, I think this is a tough design that it going to be very hard to kill.
