Overview:
After winning new contracts with the Free Worlds League Militia based on the performance of
the refitted Vulcan VL-7M, the president of Nimakachi Fusion Products had his hands full.
Between filling orders for larger 'Mechs and completing his share of Project Retread, Danel
Trevethicke had little time to think of the future of the company. Fortune smiled on Danel
one more time, however, in the form of a grateful father. Recently released from prison,
Myron Trevethicke could not legally take a position of authority in the company. But he
could assist quietly from the shadows. Myron gradually assumed control of day-to-day
operations from the concealment of his son's inner office while Danel returned to doing what
he did best – planning for the future of Nimikachi.
One of the first designs Danel initiated after returning from Les Halles was an improved
version of the Vulcan, one which could deal with standard infantry and also handle the
rapidly growing threat of battle armor. Danel had seen what these relatively cheap and
quickly-trained squads could do when the 3rd Oriente lost two Archers early on to the
Capellan's jump-capable Fa-Shih battle armor.
Capabilities:
The Vulcan II VLC-N3 is outwardly similar to its predecessor, the Vulcan VL-7M. However,
the N3 differs considerably internally, starting with its 280 Magna extra light Fusion
Engine. This gives the Vulcan II nearly the same mobility as another Nimakachi product, the
Venom; the N3 has a top speed of nearly 120 kph and can jump 210 meters with ease. The
combination of an extra light engine and an Endo Steel chassis permits the new design to
carry eight and a half tons of Kallon Royalstar Standard armor, nearly 100% of the maximum
allowed.
The weapon loadout is equally impressive. No longer burdened with the requirement that this
design be able to take on another BattleMech, Nimakachi equipped the Vulcan II with four
Small Pulse Lasers, two housed in each arm. With standard infantry covered, next to be
installed were three Medium Pulse Lasers – ideal for combat with battle armor. As the
new machine was highly mobile and most likely to be in the vanguard – and because it
would need backup if it did encounter another 'Mech – Nimakachi subcontracted with
another League manufacturer (the freewheeling Gilmour MilTech) for a supply of the famed
Cipher ComSys 1-C, which features a C3 Slave unit.
Finally, Nimakachi techs installed eleven Double Heat Sinks, enough to allow a Vulcan II
pilot to run and fire all his weapons without overheating. Jumping poses a problem,
however. Significant heat spikes can quickly disable careless Mechwarriors who ignore the
heat meter during a battle.
Deployment:
Advance prototypes of the Vulcan II even now undergo rigorous trials. We assume that some,
like their predecessor the VL-7M, may also be 'tested' under actual battle conditions in the
coming year. Even if the design proves a success, it will not appear in front line units
for at least another six months, or until Nimakachi establishes a stock of repair parts in
the supply stream. If it can keep to the current production schedule, the Vulcan II will be
the League's only 'pure' anti-infantry 'Mech to see action before 3063. Meanwhile, our
Order has received information suggesting that an even more deadly infantry 'hunter' is in
the development stage at Earthwerks, Incorporated. Code-named 'Buthidae', it is not
expected to see production until at least 3065.

Comment:
An interesting variant of the old workhorse. Additional speed is definitely a nice feature, but I'm not sure whether I'd like to place the XL engine on a 'Mech that is usually fielded in built up areas where it can be easily ambushed. Maybe I'd try a variant with a BAP, but C3 is also a handy piece of equipment, so I'd probably drop one of the SPL and a JJ or a DHS. The pulse lasers can rip through any infantry with the exception of the heaviest BAs with ease, but their range is limited. That isn't much of a problem for something that can go 7/11/7 and packs full armour for it's weight. Just don't expose yourself too much and you'll do fine. If there is a thing that I'd like to see than it would be my favourite universal solution for anything - the flamer ;)
