Overview:
In 3015, the Taurian Defense Force issued a competition for the development and deployment
of a new medium weight battlemech--the first designed by the Concordiat since the
Reunification War. The TDF wanted a new medium that could counter the Davion Enforcer and
Centurion and the Liao Vindicator, as well as serve as a general-purpose well-rounded design
to complement their current Mech force. Four years later, Taurian Territorial Industries
had completed a preliminary design, the TND-1A Tornado.
TTI choose to use equipment already in production in the Concordiat for its new design.
With the idea of a general-purpose, multi-use design, the engineers had the idea to revamp
the heavy Thunderbolt into a smaller, less expensive medium. Using weapon systems available
for the TDF's Thunderbolts--as well as the LRM from the Griffin--, TTI rapidly commenced
production of eight prototypes.
Tested in 3020, the Tornado was accepted by the TDF for general production in 3021. Since
then, it has been issued to most TDF line forces and planetary defense militias, and a small
number have been made available for export to fund increased production within the
cash-strapped TDF.
Capabilities:
Based on a 50-ton frame, the Tornado retains the speed and the majority of the weapons array
of its parent design--the Thunderbolt. The LRM-15 was down-graded to a Delta Dart LRM-10
launcher (shared with the Griffin currently in production) with 24 rounds of ammunition.
The laser armament of the Thunderbolt was retained (one large and three medium lasers), and
one machine gun and ammunition were fitted for anti-personnel work. The design engineers
had originally planned to install an SRM-2 and a second machine-gun, but late in the project
dropped those two weapon systems in favor of jump jets. Thirteen heat sinks provide the
Tornado with adequete heat management capacity.
Unabashedly a bracket fighter, the Tornado carries more weapons than the pilot can safely
fire. However, the Mech Warrior can fire his long/medium range weapons and walk without
overheating, or his short range weapons and jump without overheating. The design is one
that rewards capable pilots.
Finally, ten and a half tons of armor protection provide the best possible armor level
possible on a 50-ton design. The design team were pleased with the overall result--a
lighter version of the Thunderbolt that costs nearly 2 million c-bills less, but retains
most of its capabilties.
Deployment:
As a relatively new design that only entered production 4 years ago, few Tornado's have been
produced. Most have been assigned to I and II Corps--though at least sixteen have been
assigned to planetary defense militias on New Vandenberg and in the Hyades Cluster. Eight
TND-1A's have been sold to various Inner Sphere mercenary organizations.
Variants:
Currently, there is only one variant of the Tornado--the TND-1B. The B model replaces the
machine gun and ammo mounted in the left arm with a flamer for incendiary work. The TDF
Plans and Operations Board had directed TTI to produced the B variant at a 1-3 ratio (1 B
variant for every 3 A variants produced).

If I removed the AC from a cent and replaced it with a LL then I'd probably get something like this. Hmm, the same can be said about Wolverine Griffin...
Well, there are many mediums which in one way or another resemble this, but there is one which is nearly identical, the Wyvern. Not that I'm criticizing it, I've made something similar too, but don't expect me to get too excited. Heavy armour, good firepower and moderate speed augmented by JJs is never lost on the field of Succession wars and the fact that there are a MG, a lot of ammo to spare and energy weapons makes this an ideal, if not original periphery 'Mech.

Comment:
This is an impressive, versatile design that should be able to fight well at any range. The weapons are nicely layered, and capable of quite a punch. The JJ's can be a big help, and it carries plenty of ammo for the missile launcher (important if it comes up against heavy/assault mechs and needs to keep it's distance). It can't quite stand up to a Thunderbolt, but that's hardly a flaw for a medium mech.
