Overview:
    With the outbreak of the First Succession War, Coordinator Minoru Kurita ordered a review of
    all DCMS battlemech designs, with an eye towards increasing the strength of the Dragon by
    developing more powerful 'mech designs.  The Jenner was the most successful product of this
    initiative, but another project was launched looking at ways to increase the effectiveness
    of the Panther.  The Panther Mk. II was the result of this project.  Several prototypes were
    built and tested, and the design was approved for construction by the Coordinator himself.
    By this time, the DCMS had driven far enough into the Federated Suns that the Coordinator
    considered Dieron a safe location for a major new 'mech plant.  A week after Minoru Kurita
    signed the final orders, he was assassinated on Kentares.  Soon afterwards, Davion forces
    began a major counter-attack, which ultimately culminated in several nuclear strikes which
    destroyed sixty percent of Dieron's industry.  The Panther Mk. II plant was one of the
    casualties.  In the wake of the First Succession War, the new Coordinator, Jinjiro Kurita,
    did not have enough resources to proceed with the Panther Mk. II project.

Capabilities:
    The Panther Mk. II is similar to its progenetor in most respects.  It is five tons heavier
    and carries additional armor protection, bringing the 'mech into low end of the medium
    weight class, a move intended to make it more competitive with the Enforcer.  It uses a
    Lord's Light PPC as it's primary weapon, and retains the original model's movement and
    jumping profile.  In order to increase the Panther's infighting ability, two medium lasers
    were added to it's armament.  The cockpit layout is virtually identical to the original
    Panther's, a move intended to minimize the additional training necessary to move pilots over
    to the new model.

Deployment:
    Only an initial batch of thirty Panther Mk. IIs were ever deployed by the DCMS, but they
    have enjoyed considerable success.  The precise number of examples of the model which
    continue to operate as of 3025 is unknown to any intelligence agency, even the ISF, as at
    least five Panther Mk. IIs have fallen into the hands of mercenaries and pirates.
    Remarkably, neither the Federated Suns nor the Lyran Commonwealth have ever captured one,
    although they have confirmed destroying at least ten in battle.  This leaves a maximum of
    fifteen Panther Mk. IIs in the hands of House Kurita, although the number is probably
    smaller due to the inevitable mechanical breakdowns experienced by all 'mechs deprived of a
    source of custom spare parts.  Although the Panther Mk. II shares many parts with the 9R
    model, it uses a radically different engine and jump jets.  The jump jets are particularly
    difficult to replace, due to the unusual way they fit into the 'mech's torso, making it
    possible that some technician may have done away with a damaged jump jet system altogether
    and replaced it with additional weapons or armor.  Because of the design's similarity to the
    9R model it is difficult for foreign intelligence agencies to single it out in a specific
    regiment.
