Overview:
Though less common than in houses Steiner, Davion and Kurita, House Marik also retains
several of the awe-inspiring Atlas class ?mechs, that date back to the days of the
StarLeague. Because of their rarity and the expense of maintenance which comes with that,
basically all of them are house owned. They are given out to high ranking officers, in the
hope of increasing the rate of survival for both man and machine.
However, recently it has become obvious that the Atlas, despite its power, was not suited to
rear-echelon leadership. Its weaponry requires the pilot to close. In fact, it tempts the
pilot to go hunting himself!
When that was the case again, in the recent abortive raid of 3022 on Penobscot in the
Steiner Tremaine system, it cost the life of commanding Colonel Marcus Galliani. As a direct
result, House Marik military withdrew all Atlas ?mechs for refitting.
The company which won the contract was the state-owned Free Worlds Defense Industries. This
initially caused for many raised eyebrows, seeing as that company was specialised in the
construction of aerospace fighters. However, it became clear that everything was in order:
the FWDI?s flagship is the Riever fighter, itself a 100-tonner. Several variants had been
produced for it. One, the 100B was very unpopular, meaning that there was a large stockpile
of refit kits left. And FWDI engineers proved on a prototype (Galliani?s own salvaged Atlas)
that the Atlas could easily adapt to this kit! Thus was born the Atlas AS-7M.
Capabilities:
The Atlas AS-7M was refitted to move the focus of combat to a longer range. Any commander
could direct fire from a safe distance, or engage any enemy head-hunter units from beyond
their range. Clearly this new variant wants to stop officers from facing the brunt of
combat. Retraining in these new machines is going to go hand in hand with an assignment of a
personal battlefield bodyguard, who, in turn is generally assigned the Orion ON1-VA, a ?mech
which provides excellent protection up close.
The refit kit itself provides the Atlas with two Imperator-A medium Autocannons, which are
slung under the fore-arms. In order to accommodate for this huge weight, the engineers were
forced to drop all secondary laser armament, along with its heat-dissipation system, as well
as the SRM launcher. The complex Doombud LRM launcher also taxed the internal systems too
much, and was thus replaced with the readily available Gamma-10 launcher, straight out of
the Riever assembly lines. Since this is a much more simple design, conventional missile
tubes were fitted in the Atlas? torso. The result is a ?mech that has both a definite focus
towards long range combat and, due to its exclusive ammunition-based load, will be forced to
withdraw should the fire fight be too prolonged. All in all, this should result in many
House Marik officers living longer!
Deployment:
The Atlas AS-7M is still being converted as of 3025. Any new units serving on the fronts are
showing their worth by not causing any major news!

Damned! I like it! But it has some flaws nonetheless. The long range firepower isn't that much increased but the mech now carries only ammo dependent weaponry. I too think that it has too much heatsinks: drop three of them to mount an LRM-15 plus a ton of ammo or three medium laser. If the enemy gets close the AC/20 is still a heavy weapon that can demolish any opposition

F-100B may not be popular, but this Atlas probably won't be liked by the pilots either. AC/5s are a little weak and I can't see the reason for this to carry 5 additional heat sinks. I think that additional LRMs and maybe a large laser would be better. The story behind the 'Mech saves the it from below average mark.

If the goal here is to encourage Atlas pilots to stay out of combat by gutting the capabilities of their 'mech, that goal has been acheived. I really don't think this would be a good thing to do to your Atlas. Although the stated purpose of this design is to increase long-range firepower, the overall amount of damage this Atlas can generate at long range does not change at all (1 LRM20 traded for an LRM10 and two AC/5s). In exchange for the two autocannons, short range firepower is gutted, and the 'mech becomes totally ammo dependent. If the government tried to do this to my Atlas, I'd take it and go hire on with any of the dozens of merc units which would love to have a pilot with his own Atlas.

solved the range problem somewhat but it depends entirely on ammo fed weapons. one good shot will destroy the mech entirely. stick to long range and have some j-27's ready to reload the mech

I like the fluff and reasoning but I still can't like the mech. That ammo makes that make a reliant death trap. Nice try though.
