Overview:
    The PHX class presented the Star League's engineers with a difficult series of choices when
    it came to applying upgraded technology to the design.  Previous experience had demonstrated
    the expense of upgraded large numbers of old battlemechs to double heat sinks; however, the
    most obvious means of upgrading the Phoenix Hawk involved installing such high heat weapons
    as ER and pulse laser systems.  After some debate it was decided to develop an EW version of
    the Phoenix Hawk.

Capabilities:
    The PHX-17 carries a Beagle Active Probe and a TAG system.  The Active Probe was deemed
    necessary to allow the Phoenix Hawk to avoid infantry ambushes.  With a purely laser based
    weapons load the 'mech is fairly vulnerable to infantry.  Ferro-fibrous armor was used for
    the upgrade, allowing the armor protection on the cockpit and arms to be upgraded.  The
    right arm, which houses the 'mech's main armament, carries slightly heavier shielding.

Deployment:
    The PHX-17 achieved reasonable popularity in the SLDF; however, the original PHX-1 was never
    fully phased out; it's machine guns were extremely valuable in the house-to-house fighting
    which characterized much of the Amaris war.
