Overview:
The Shadow Hawk was produced on Zion by the Star League during the 28th and 29th century.
After the Amaris war, the planet fell into Liao hands; eager to improve on the abilities of
the already famed Shadow Hawk, Liao engineers designed their own version of the 'mech, using
the Zion facilities to produce the new design, dubbed the SHD-2L. Unfortunately for Liao,
Marik forces took the Zion system during the Succession Wars. Unwilling to allow a valuable
'mech plant to fall into the hands of the Free Worlds League, the Chancellor ordered the
plant destroyed from orbit once it became clear Capellan forces could not hold the system.
Deprived of their sole source of repair parts, the Shadow Hawks in Liao service gradually
deteriorated; often even lightly damaged units had to be scrapped because Liao technicians
lacked access to some small but crucial part. Eventually, Liao decided to unload the
problem onto his mercenary units, offering Shadow Hawk 2Ls to damaged mercenary units. Due
to this practice, the few surviving 2Ls are spread across the Inner Sphere, mostly in the
service of mercenary units or small periphery armies. None are known to operate in the
forces of House Liao today.
Capabilities:
The Shadow Hawk 2L boasts superior close combat capabilities. Jump range has been increased
by forty percent, to maximum, and the ineffectual LRM-5 system replaced with an SRM-4.
Additionally, Liao engineers found space for an extra ton of AC/5 ammunition, significantly
decreasing the 'mech's dependence on a secure supply line. The 2L variant of the Shadow
Hawk is most easily identified by the absence of a large barrel launcher mounted on the
right torso. In order to allow the SRM-4 launcher to fit into the limited confines of the
head assembly, it uses a quick loader system similar to that found on the Atlas' LRM-20,
allowing the system's two tubes to deploy a barrage of four missiles in under two seconds.
Deployment:
Due to parts shortages, only four Shadow Hawk 2Ls are known to remain in service in regular
Capellan forces. As these 'mechs can only be repaired with captured parts, their continued
service to the House of Liao is uncertain. In particular, two of these 'mechs are believed
to have malfunctioning gyro systems. The unique SRM-4 system is also irreplacable.
Attempts to replace it with more conventional SRM-4 launchers have failed. Several 2Ls are
also in service with various mercenary units spread throughout the Inner Sphere; most of
these originally found their way into mercenary hands when the Capellans decided to abandon
the design.

I think this mech would be better suited for urban combat, or other close terrain. The loss of the LRM means that the mech is totally dependant on the AC for any kind of ranged abilites. While it deals more damage than an average LRM5 strike, it lacks the range.
A lance of these mechs, in close combat, will be very very effective. In long ranged combat, these mechs will be able to make an accounting of themselves, but probably will need to leave the field for ammo before the combat is over.

It upgrades short range firepower from original, but doesn't add too much and 2L adds some mobility. I must rate it as the original, as good multipurpose mech (and with good fluff too).

I find this upgrade barely better than the original. However, the added mobility is nice with the full jump.
Its not something I'd go out and do to my Shadow Hawks, but its also something I'd not change if it showed up.
I'd live with it because it works and gives you a new bag of tricks at the cost of a minor weapon, I never was too fond of.

I hold the exact opposite opinion of Seraph, I've always like SHDs BECAUSE they don't excel at anything, but are good in unit tactics where the weapon load performs best. To me this SHD is less effective then its original base. However, good fluff :)

While I've never been impressed with the Shadow Hawk to begin with; this design seems a compromise. While never able to excel at any area of combat the Shadow Hawk was able to perform poor to okay in almost all areas. This design looks for more close in combat as the jumping capacity was maxed for it's movement and the LRM dropped for a larger SRM system. It lessens it's ability to provide long range fire support but becomes a little better of a brawler. Though still outclassed by the other mechs of it's weight class this makes the most of a bad start.
