Description: |
Thirty years before the Clan invasion, the crumbling empires of the Inner Sphere were locked in the horror of the Third Succession War. The great Houses, whose territories spanned the stars, used BattleMechs to smash each other into rubble.
Grayson Death Carlyle had been training to be a MechWarrior since he was ten years old, but his graduation came sooner than expected. With his friends and family dead and his father‘s regiment destroyed, young Grayson finds himself stranded on a world turned hostile. And now he must learn the hardest lesson of all: it takes more than a BattleMech to make a MechWarrior.
To claim the title of MechWarrior, all he has to do is capture one of those giant killing machines by himself.
If it doesn‘t kill him first. |

The first Battletech novel I ever read. I enjoyed seeing how the Grey Death legion got started and it was fun to read a lower ranked character's story even if he became more imortant later on. |

A good read, although if Stingers and Locusts were as effective against Griffins and their ilk in the game as they are in this book I'd populate my whole unit with nothing but twenty tonners. |

This was the third Btech book I bought when I returned from overseas. The concept fascinated me and at the time I thought that this was a great depiction of the how Battletech should be fought. That was many years ago...
And now for the review:
Generally, it is a well written book with captivating action sequences ( especially during the last third of the book). The plot is well thought out and the characters are quite developed. I found that the authors continuous use of scenery to be very effective in allowing the reader to picture what it would e like on Trellwan.
On the technical side, the author did justice to the various mechs involved in this book. The major complaint ( and it is fluff) is that the jumpship/dropship references were confusing. This author tried (but failed in my opinion) to differentiate between the two, but the result was that of confusion. You really needed a knowledge of Battletech to understand that there was difference and what it was. Additionally, the author seems to overplayed the power of the medium laser and the might of a light mech(again I must remember that this is fluff).
That being said, I enjoyed reading this book again and must list it among the top ten Btech books. It is definitely one of my favorites. |

This is the book that lit the fire for me. I had bought a few things before this, but this book tied it all together. Ft. Meade, Md. 1989. It captured the spirit of what being a mercenary mechwarrior is and after all, THAT is a big part of Btech |
