Overview:
A complete redesign of the Bushwacker, the BSW-S3 is based on the lessons of the FedCom
Civil War; namely the need to reduce ammunition dependence among front line BattleMechs.
Strangely for a modern Steiner design, the BSW-S3 uses an XL engine, as opposed to the less
vulnerable light engine. While this decision increases the BSW-S3's vulnerability to
internal damage and ammunition explosions, it also permits the BSW-S3 to maintain its speed
and still mount a strong array of weapons.
Capabilities:
Since the Bushwacker was never very good at its intended role - engaging Clan opponents at
long range - designers have abandoned it, and have instead concentrated on making a 'Mech
which is more balanced between long and short ranged weapons. The BSW-S3 mounts an LB-10X
autocannon as its primary weapon; this weapon provides a strong, versatile punch at a good
range, and is light enough to let the S3 mount a strong array of weapons to support it. An
ER large laser provides non-ammunition dependent firepower at long range. At closer ranges,
the BSW-S3 has three ER medium lasers, which give it more energy based firepower than
previous Bushwackers have had. A single Streak SRM 6 rack on the left shoulder replaces what
has previously been either an LRM 5 or SRM 4. The Streak rack is more economical in its use
of ammunition than another missile weapon would be, and also inflicts more damage.
Deployment:
The BSW-S3 is fully tested, and will soon begin coming off the production lines on Tharkad.
That it will go to front line units is a given, but the LAAF has not yet decided which units
will be the first to receive the it. Nor has the LAAF decided what to do with those
Bushwackers already in service with front line units.
