I can't find the actual battle armor construction rules, so I'm tossing this out as a general "test of concept" until I can.

Fluff:
Near the end of the Old Star League, designers and engineers had hit upon a breakthrough in combat: the Nighthawk battle armor suit. Although it would take over a hundred years for the concept of battle armor to actually prove its place on the battle field, the Nighthawk still represented a bold new design. For the longest time, however, it was believed that the Nighthawk was nothing more than a memory, with all functional prototypes having either been destroyed during the offensive against The Usurper or taken with Kerensky when he left the Inner Sphere.

This changed when New Nauvoo intelligence agent / Lostech prospector Meos Remington successfully located a functional Nighthawk prototype during the course of her several expeditions. The New Nauvoo technicians and engineers quickly went to work analyzing both the unit and all data sources recovered with it, and in astonishingly short order proved able to begin mass-production of the Nighthawks, a testament to the nation's ability to reverse-engineer anything that comes into its hands.

But while the Nighthawk made for an excellent security and force recon machine, the decision was made that individual Nighthawks by themselves were still outmatched by vehicles and mechs. To deal with this, the base design of the Nighthawk was taken and heavily reworked, the end result being the Helaman.

The idea behind the Helaman is that individual units would be to the Nighthawk as commandos are to the regular military forces. Although somewhat heavier and at least slightly bulkier than the Nighthawk, the Helaman wears the weight well. Not only does it have thicker armor, it also has a unique contribution of its own: a modular jet pack assembly. The "interceptor" jet pack design practically allows a Helaman unit to fly with its high speed and thrust, and also brings with it three infantry-portable LRM missiles that can be used to strike targets from range. The "heavy combat" jet pack design does not permit quite so much in the way of thrust, but comes equipped with two hard-mounted over-the-shoulder infantry SRM 2 launchers.

Although the Helaman has no other hard-mounted weapons, most operators prefer to wield an AFNN-standard "Feather Duster" machine gun and tend to keep at least one vibro-blade of some sort handy as a close-quarters backup.

Rough Concept:

A standard Helaman, by itself, moves as per standard battle armor. It has 6 points of armor. A "Feather Duster" does 1 point of BTech damage and has a range of 2 hexes.

The "Interceptor" jet pack adds an additional 2 points of armor, and permits a jump MP of 5.

The "Heavy Combat" jet pack adds an additional 4 points of armor, and permits a jump MP of 3.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

official rules are in TechManual.

I like the idea of strapping on additional plates as a modular addition. I doubt its covered by the rules, but its not beyond belief.

The extra armor represents the flight packs themselves and the launchers attached to them.

logically, yes. game rules wise, no.

but i'd say adding extra armor at say 1 slot is not unreasonable as part of a missions pack.

Well, since the suit is still in the "experimental" stage and the group I'm about to run a campaign for is mostly new to the game (only one player with any prior experience), I'm pretty sure that I can justify any deviation from the rules at this point as random tech quirks & goofs.
