I'm pretty sure that the topic has appeared already over and over, so here's my take on these.
Probably all armies of the Inner Sphere have attempted to perfect an autocannon, that would have the massive range of rifled guns of old and keep the good qualities of the ACs. So far there was little sucess in the area and the advent (and re-introduction) of Gauss weapons has made this research mostly superfluous eventhough it enjoyed small renaissance during third sucession war. On Periphery the research continued however and after Outworlds Alliance the technology has been quickly mastered by Taurians and Cirnicus and after that the long barrel ACs have been fielded all around the Sphere. The only thing preventing widespread use is their gross inefficiency.
Extended range, or ER for short, has been introduced in designation to avoid confusion with Light Ballistics guns. The ER ACs pack the same punch as standard ACs, but with twice the range. They need somewhat heavier ammo to propel the shells to greater range, but they can use standard ammo in a pinch. With inferior ammo the AC just reverts to standard range. The ER ACs also can use special ammo, which can be easily modified for use with longer range ammo.
ER AC/2 heat 1 damage 2 minimum/short/medium/long 8/16/32/48 ammo 36 tons 7 critical 2
ER AC/5 heat 2 damage 5 minimum/short/medium/long 6/12/24/36 ammo 16 tons 9 critical 4
ER AC/10 heat 4 damage 10 minimum/short/medium/long 5/10/20/30 ammo 8 tons 14 critical 9
ER AC/20 heat 8 damage 20 minimum/short/medium/long 3/6/12/18 ammo 4 tons 16 critical 12

Nice so far but i'm not sure: double range seems a bit much to me.
Maybe this ranges?
ER AC/2: 6/12/24/36
ER AC/5: 5/9/18/27
ER AC/10:4/8/16/24
ER AC/20:3/5/10/15

That was actually whole point of those. I wanted a GUN with RANGE. BV would take care of the rest.
EDIT:
I had a few thoughts for further ballancing.
- Double penalties for movement when firing.
- Less ammo per ton (I chose to moderate this because it makes special ammo useless.
- Possibility to jam. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Oh, thats only me
If you really want RANGE just go for it!
If you want another disadvantage nevertheless:
Maybe the First one, please not the third ! _________________ Reality is where the Pizza-man comes from!'Gucken, petzen, verpissen!' I'm also in favour of the first. It goes nicely with tank flavour where stoping to fire is almost required when you don't have a sophisticated targeting computer. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Sounds reasonable to me.
I can't give BV calculations because my HeavyMetal software isn't readable any more _________________ Reality is where the Pizza-man comes from!'Gucken, petzen, verpissen!'
