Here's the situation.
The party is tasked with taking out an OPFOR helibase.
The idea is thus. Two mechs from the party will go and make a scene, causing the base to focus on them. While this is going on, a second team consisting of snipers and five other mechs will engage the helibase. The snipers will take out the pilots and anyone who might send out an SOS, while the mechs will start chipping away at the base defenses. Once the base is thrown into confusion, a Mantis VTOL would escort in a helicopter containing a squad of commandos; these commandos would then start assaulting the base from a third direction.
One of the players, who was tasked with supporting the snipers, decided that time was of the essence and so literally rushed the base. He ran his mech right up to the tarmac, where he spotted a helicopter crew that had made it into their VTOL and were trying to power it up.
He literally decided to run up there and punch the thing before it could get off the ground.
I ruled that the helicopter blades sliced up his hand actuator. While he did indeed manage to ground the helicopter due to the blades coming apart, his mech is now down for repairs.

That's just cruel  His armor would have protected his actuators :p

I kept telling him to just kick the bloody thing, since I'd have ruled that a successful hit would have crushed the canopy glass and killed the crew.
But no, he had other ideas...

These were Karnovs and Pintos, making them about the same size (tonnage-wise) as his mech.

He still could have picked up a smaller VTOL and thrown it... I'm sure there were little 2 seat personnel VTOLS there
And it would have been funny as hell.
Of course, I'd have just ripped up a tree while rushing in and thrown that into the blades or something equally creative

Well, for starters the rules do not allow you to punch lvl 1 vehicles. You can pick them up or kick them or hit them with a tree, as others have said. His armor definitely would've protected his actuators, though it is likely that a couple points of damage would have been done. But there's really no rules for that, and if he had kicked, you wouldn't apply damage, so it's only fair to reason that he shouldn't receive damage from a punch either.

The player in question has a habit of doing reckless and stupid stuff, so I figured that letting his mech get damaged would serve as a reminder to be more careful the next time around.

Those are the ones who usually get others around them killed but continue to survive. There is even a word for them, but it wont come to me now.

Thing is, he's the party sniper and so has enough skills to avoid actually getting killed.
