For my campaign, owing to how long it takes to create characters I usually go and draw up characters ahead of time and then let the players decide whether or not they want to play as that person.
Someone asked if they could join in the group, so I went ahead and did the rolling; I've yet to contact them about their character.
I created said character to be an areospace fighter pilot as this is an area the party is short in.
However, there were some unforseen difficulties.
*Event rolls alone not only gave the character the Commission trait but gave the character 4 points into it; at a Force Commander (FWL rank), he'll outrank everyone else in the party.
*The campaign storyline is that the FWL forces on-planet have been shattered due to a coup. Owing to the character's high rank, once matters settle down the character would realistically be tapped to help rebuild. Problem is, the party is a mercenary unit; odds are they'd never see the character again once the campaign is over, and I don't want to put the player himself through that kind of situation of getting attached to a character and then having to ditch it merely because of plot progression.
So, my dilemma:
Do I tell this person that I created the character, or do I roll another one up in its place?
Thanks. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Wolfwood to a random cat (Trigun)

I say leave it up to the player. He may find a way to get the character out of the FWL requirements. Honorable discharge for service above and beyond upon request, Dishonorable discharge for abandoning his post, or defection to the Mercs for feeling betrayed by his nation. Maybe if he has the Enemy trait, his enemy takes the opertunity provided by the confusion to frame the character and get him busted out of the FWL. That one gives the character a long term goal: clear his name. _________________ one must work hard to cultivate the mind and body. and one must always cultivate the mind.

Not to mention the one goal I learned in all RPGs, player goals and desires always override character goals and desires. In essence, you can rationalize almost any action after the fact, so don't worry that the action will be out of character.
For instance, you might be playing a very antisocial character, but it's still very important he get along with the rest of the group, despite what a jerk he may be to everyone else. _________________ Jarylan Blackwell

Are you rolling up multiple characters for him to choose from?
Others have already stated how point 2 may be handled, and I don't see point 1 as a problem. So what if he has a high rank. If it's a valid roll-up, then there shouldn't be any problem. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

That's what I'll probably end up doing.
It's just that when I do it solo, I can get a character done in about 15 minutes; when I do it with the other person present, it can easily take an hour. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." During the "Enlistment" life path, I got a natural 11 which catapulted the guy into OCS.
The first Tour of Duty life path I did for the guy gave him a 1-rank promotion.
The second one resulted in another natural 11, which gave him a 2-rank promotion. In fact, I actually rolled 12: 11,10 for that one, meaning that not only does he have a commission he now pilots an Ironsides aerofighter. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." I rolled up another character. This time, the character ended up being more like Wild Bill - www.yojoe.com/action/83/wildbill.shtml - a helicopter pilot who was consistently shown as being able to not only operate just about any vehicle in the arsenal but (as circumstances required) make it fly, too... including the tanks.
*His starting rank is 5, putting him about on the Sergeant level. This can easily be worked in.
*Although the character is officially a helicopter pilot, he can handle conventional fighters, aerospace fighters, tracked vehicles, and wheeled vehicles. In fact, I'll actually give the player his choice of what he wants to pilot (so long as it's 35 tons or less; he's only got 2 points in the Vehicle trait). He also knows how to work a battlemech, but can't hit worth a darn.
*He's got natural aptitude with rifles and is skilled at tracking, meaning that he can easily continue the fight even if he gets shot out of the sky.
The character is still multiple levels of awesome, but with this guy his awesomeness is in the fact that you can stick him behind the controls of just about anything and he'll have a fair chance of being able to operate it. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Huge Family Guy fan. Figured it was time I changed it up a bit, and I think it's hilarious how they give just a little bit of gay to Stewie!! Ok, in this image, it's a lot of gay, but in it's proper context it's hilarious.
Or we could go with my #1 answer of all time, "Because I can." _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

We've not had a game session since.
As mentioned earlier, one of the players in the group passed away under tragic circumstances last November; I've not been able to get anyone motivated to do BTech since. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat."
