==Overview:==
From day 1, the Blackjack was a bit of an oddity. Techs, pilots, and engineers
have been tinkering with the base design for some time now, but to limited
success. Each subsequent version has managed to cure one problem, but at the
cost of another.
Seeking to make the machine profitable, engineers at GM made a radical
decision in regards to options with the mech. Instead of drawing inspiration
from other weapons systems, they drew inspiration from other mechs: the
Longbow and the Crossbow. The decision was made that instead of laser or
ballistic systems in the arms, the arms would be reworked to fit missile
systems. Thus, the unit was unofficially dubbed "Shortbow."
In keeping with the name, the final arsenal was done around urban fighting and
short-range fire support. Both arms now sport an LRM 5 rack and an SRM 4 rack,
the 5s allowing for long-range suppression while the 4s provide good
short-range punch. Two of the medium lasers were dropped, helping to make room
for an ECM Suite and an Active Probe, both of which are virtually
indespensible for city fighting. The other two were moved to the center torso,
with one of them now facing to the rear to help discourage anyone from trying
to sneak up on the mech; the fact that the mech can rotate its arms around to
fire into the rear arc is also a big plus in this regards.
In order to handle the heat from all of this, the decision was made to use
double heat sinks. This decision proved wise, as it allowed the designers to
pull one of the heat sinks but still allow for full ventilation. The weight
and internal savings allowed for the addition of an anti-infantry machine gun
as a nod to the design's new role.
