==Overview:==
After several years in the field, troubling reports began to come back to
Earthworks concerning how well the Apollo has faired in the field.
The mech's average speed, lack of jump jets, and lack of CASE made the mech a
veritable death trap in the event that fast and/or jump-capable mechs with
powerful in-close arsenals (such as Hunchbacks and Commandos) managed to get
within the minimum range of the LRMs. This problem was exacerbated by the fact
that the primary version of the Apollo only had small pulse lasers, leaving a
gaping hole in the mech's defenses.
Facing a rapid downturn of Apollo sales if the problems were not corrected,
Earthworks decided to come up with a version to try and satisfy the complaints
of the pilots.
They started with the 3T model, a model that boasted modest short-range
defensive firepower. In order to improve the defensive abilities of the mech,
the Artemis IV systems were stripped in favor of CASE for each torso. The
medium pulse lasers were downgraded back to normal medium lasers, reducing the
damage potential but increasing available tonnage and decreasing the heat
output.
The leftover tonnage was used to install an ECM Suite in order to make the
Apollo that much harder to locate during battle; the torso-mounted lasers were
moved to the side torsos to accomodate this decision. Three small lasers,
including one laser in each leg, were added in order to provide the mech with
some additional short-range firepower. The usefulness of these lasers is
debateable, however, and so Earthworks is experimenting with a variant that
replaces the lasers and a little bit of armor with jump jets.
