I've been reading up on certain BT events for something that i am doing and got to thinking: what would be different if X occured?
Well in this case my X is, what would be different if Kerensky had not left the Inner Sphere but had instead pulled a Comstar using the SLDF? What if instead of leaving he laid claim to Terra and all planets within 1 jump as SLDF Protectorate property and then went into seclusion within this small nationet with the goal of letting the fool lords be fools while he protected the heart of the fallen star league from their corrupting influences?

Interesting. I think that there would be a slew of attempts to bribe and entice him to back one of the Successor Lords and when al lthat failed there would be subvertive attempts to force him to attack a House by another House. And if that failed then there would be a wholesale attempt to crack the nut as it were to lay claim to Terra. It would prolly take a century to do but it would be done as the small group of worlds claimed by Kerensky would run out of resources to continue compared to the comparitively unlimited resources of the various Houses.

...and what would happen once Kerensky died? Certainly there would be those in the SLDF who sympathized with one House or another, and others who would be "Crusaders" who would want to reconquer the Inner Sphere and refound the Star League.

I think it would change a lot, but the changes increase in magnitude as you go down the line.
Case 1) The houses do no attack Kerensky.
In this case, there would be no clans, and no Comstar/WoB/Jihad. The succession wars may still happen, but a small sphere of humanity is left untouched. Whether the Hegemony/Star League/Whatever attempts to take the initiative then is a decision I cannot predict, but I do predict less technology will be lost, since they can either try and trade with Kerensky's state, or steal it from them.
Case 2) The houses attack. Or, possible nightmare scenario.
The houses attack, and by virtue of both numbers and the exhausted state of the SLDF, crush the tiny proto-state. Time continues as normal into the succession wars. What is scary about this is that without a third party capable of protecting HPG knowledge, that knowledge may very well be lost. If jump ships are then lost as well, humanity is effectively cut off from space, and will have a tough time getting back. Not impossible, but hard.
Both of these outlooks take a very shaky look at the future though. It really could happen any of various different ways.

I posted several of similar postings a while back, like what if Kurtia had pushed on towards New Avalon instead of going after Robinson or what if House Davion had sided with the SLDF when they were retaking Terran worlds from Stephan and his forces etc...
So if you guys want I can post the above again as their own topics or as part of this one...
