So, now the tech manual is out, how has designing a mech changed? I'll eventually read it, but I was curious. I know rules are now split up into Tournament or Advanced (no more levels).
How about designing mechs? I assume there is no more Level 1, 2 or 3? _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

Well I am going to wait for the book, so it's a wait and see thing for me on this one. And I agree, the mech rules for construction were fine...new toys are good and all but I can wait for the book and the one or two erratta sheets that will come out. _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

The main reason I asked is I glanced over it and saw the Engine table which breaks down the weight based on rating. It lists 8 engine types (Compact, Standard, Light, XL, ICE, Cell, etc) but I didn't see where it listed what "Level" each engine type was, or even a game-use explanation of each.
Maybe they're gonna put that type of detail in a different book, and this one just describes how to design them with no regard to level?
I don't know. Maybe I should read. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

Anything in the Tech Manual in Tourney legal, similar to the old levels 1 and 2. Tactical Operations will cover the non-tourney legal stuff, or what was formerly level 3.
And actually, Mech construction really hasn't changed at all, with the exception of a whole lot of new toys to play with. I haven't really looked over the rest of the book yet, but you can't armor your infantry anymore. Maybe that'll make it into the Tactical Handbook. _________________ Stand to your glasses steady, and drink to your comrade's eyes: Here's a cup to the dead already, and hurrah for the next one that dies.

OK. It listed a lot of stuff that use to be in MaxTech (at least with the engines, there are now 8 types to choose from; although why you'd want a non-Fusion engine in a BattleMech I don't know), so a lot of that is now tournament legal. Which means the classifications of the designs now have to change from Level 1, 2 and 3 to either Tournament or Advanced (just like the rules). _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

So they're basically blotting out the distinction between 3025 tech and later stuff... _________________ "The enemy's gate is down."

Yep, they are going to drag us old schoolers into the new age kicking and screaming.
Blur the line so it is harder for us to make a stand behind it.
The new guys will wonder why you drive that old jalopy and not a new one. We will be like the classic car guys pulling up next to a pimped out ride. Of couse you do not race them, just bump their light little plastic body into the crub and zoom off to victory.

Well, they aren't entirely getting rid of us. Every piece of equipment has an Availability rating to it, which defines during what era a piece of equipment is available. It is split out into 3 eras with one of them being 3025-like (up-to the succession wars, I believe).
So, technically once a mech is designed, it will have an overall Availability rating for the 3025 era. If it uses newer equipment it will be X, indicating this mech would not be available. It breaks down to rarity, but you could essentially stte that your mech must have an availability rating of at least D to ne used for a certain scenario.
Kinda neat, to be honest. And it accomplishes the same thing but in a more complicated, yet simpler (don't look at me like that), approach. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

Nope, starting to resemble the old Star Fleet battles that was the first real board game I played. Was a great game until they added so much 'technology' and crap that the game just bogged down with people not knowing the rules. There are people out there now that haven't the slightest idea of what the basic rules are, but will argue vehemently that they are correct, and this just makes it worse.
Have fun.

Oh great. Battletech is going to end up like the original Car Wars. So many weapons you can't keep track of them.

I have to agree with the both of you. That will be a concern. Less tactics since you will have no idea what they are using. This may eventually cause a rift in the players; hardcore 3025; Pre Tech manual; post Tech Manual.
The later group will not even know what a medium laser does since it will not be on their radar. Of course the old harcore guys will whine and remember the glory days.
But that may work out for the better. People can play what they like but still have a single set of unifying rules.
AWAD- Tech 2 is not evil, just the DHS they added.

I think that even tech manual fans won't ignore old medium lasers. Big Medium laser battery with DHSs and fair mobility (and maybe with C3 and/ro TC) is still quite scary. If they fail to notice that then they'll find out after someone uses this against them. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!
