So has anyone else watched this yet. I picked it up wednesday and watched it all the way through. And I have to say I am very impressed. So as I wait to hear what others thought Ill post my thoughts on it.
< < < MOVIE SPOILER ALERT > > >
Animation. out of 5.
The animation is amazing. it is a beautiful blend of computer graphics and characters that have a traditional anime look. My only main complaint is the lack of long drawn out dogfights. They were the staple of the old show and were sorely lacking in the new movie. That and I really wasnt a big fan of the gen 3 veritechs. I prefered gen 1 and 2.
Story. out of 5
If you watch the bonus features you will find out that the director has something amazing. HE HAS A BRAIN! I couldnt believe that he went against what hollywood told him to do. He hired "fanboys" to help write the story, many of them were running robotech fan sites and diehard fans, the writer had just finished up work on Megas XLR and was hired after essentially begging to be part of it. They even got a guy that I now have the utmost respect for, his job was continuity, and making sure everything matched up from the 20 year old story. And from what I can remember they did a great job.
Now why didnt it get a 5 out of 5, you may be wondering? Well, honestely there are things that are left unfinished, and things only touched on. Rick Hunter and the SDF-3 come back but are attacked before they can join up with the main attack force getting ready to assault the Invid base at Reflex point. A ship goes out to try to save him, they are jumped by the same forces that are unknown but will soon be figured out to be the onetime allies of the SDF-3 and her crew. The Haydonites are introduced and have given trojan horse technology to the robotech defenders. Essentially it looks to be the start of a new series, (at least hopefully).
Character Development. This is a little tricky so I am going to say out of 5.
Most of the characters are picking up right where they left off. And the new characters they do introduce and give you some back ground about what makes them tick. I was alittle dissapointed that they introduce a new leader in Captain Taylor, (voiceed by Mark Hamil) and he gets killed off really quick. So its a little annoying in that regard. But overall the Character development could have been better (as in most movies) but I wouldnt dwell on it.
Overall Rateing out of 5 Smiles.
I really enjoyed the movie and I hope they take it much further with out waiting another 20 years, and for anyfan of the series I highly reccomend picking it up.
