As a GM I have a lot of leeway to make battles fun. When going head to head it is usually standard environment on standard planet. So I am going to ask what is the most unusual you have done. Below is a list of some I remember for various reasons.

1) Earthquake- An earthquake during the combat. People having to make piloting rolls at random rounds. Rolling for building collapse and forests falling over. Kind of pandemonium.
2) Hot Drop- Dropping a 2 Battalions one company at a time on the PCs. Took 3 days to play but the shots in the sky, some Mech landing on top of each other, Mechs everywhere.
3) Mining/Cache- Part mine with booby traps and defensive vehicles and then cache itself having self defense systems, and random caves and caverns everywhere.
4) Dropship V Dropship, on the landing pad- with Mechs scurrying about. Just the visual is phenomenal.
5) Super light G and super heavy G- done both and it really changes the game, a Marauder moving 6/9 or a Wasp moving 4/6, changes what you are use to and tactics quickly
6) Depth 0 and 1 marsh and swamp with movement reduced by Mech weight. Lighter Mechs are more effective but jumping is a real risk to become stuck on landing. Add sinkholes for Mechs to fall into and gas pockets that rupture to obscure shots or make piloting rolls and it gets real sticky.
7) STAMPEDE- Yes I did, stampeded cattle at the PCS, 100s of thousands of cattle. More of piloting rolls and getting into a wedge formation and making a pile of hamburgers to make a wall. No MGs and Flamers make that tough. The WTF look on their face was priceless.

I have tons others but these stand out and stuff I will remember for a long time.

Let's see:

Planet with acid for water...that was fun. Jump jets became the "in" thing for a while after that one.

Canyons...not fun nope not at all.

Low gravity with no atmosphere and crystal rock formations that could slice armor up just as easily a PPCs.

Fought a dragon or three with mechs, was about as fun as fighting infantry with infernos.

Heavy gravity sounds promising...but that's just because I think battletech units more too quickly relative to the range of their weapons.

I fought once a large battle.
We were facing a trinary of Ghost Bear VS a trinary
of Hell\'s horses.We used a lot of water covered by ice.It was very funny other than a disaster for mine Ghost Bear attaking units.

A combat on a small island. Attacker had lance of jumpers, (1 light, 2 medium, 1 heavy). Defender had 1 sub, 2 wet navy vessels, and 1 mech.
Defender had to evac a team of scientists on old oil rig platform 5 hexes off shore and get them to safety. IE- not blown up. I chose the Neptune sub, 1 Hydrofoil, 1 Monitor, and a Spider. Attacker hit me with a Panther, Phoenix Hawk, Enforcer, and a Grasshopper.
All they had to do was blow up the VTOL that came in on the 3rd turn.
On the 4th turn..THE VOLCANO ERUPTED!!!!
Lava started flowing in random patterns down the slopes of the central mountain causing fires and smoke for LOS block.Got real hairy there for the attackers. I did manage to get the vtol off safely though it was close when it got hit twice.

That is just GRAND. I have done magma and volcano battles but not one that goes nova.

So came up with that? Love the entire scenario setting and the forces used, the volcano is jsut a wafer thin mint to add to the top.

Probably the most uniqe environment ive had to fight in would be The Pool from the Solaris Reaches. Movement, weapons ranges...everything changes when youre five levels underwatner. Not to mention the fact that flooding out a section of your mech tends to end things pretty fast.
Give it a shot, sometime. Im a pretty veteran player, and even I didnt knnow what the hell I was doing. Razz

vaccum sucks.
I havent fought in a vaccum environ, yet, but I think theres a couple of scenarios that use the vaccum rules. I want to say there was at least one set up in Northwind Highlanders that took place on a mesa, or some such. If youve read Impetus of War, its one of those encounters.....

But that is the beauty part of it. If you are GMing it is a way to humble your players. Suddenly their top of the line Mechs with great pilots is not so much better than average Mechs and pilots.

But putting them on a deadly atmosphere planet is fun. Everytime hte head is hit you are rolling for a breach. If it does then the pilot has to stop and put on a mask, not moving or firing. So one round to get pounded and the mask adds +1 to piloting and gunnery. Interferes with sight and neurohelmet conditions. And having to eject can be very bad. One round to roll a 7 or better, or keel over dead.

Not as bad as vacuum but still fun.

I had a scenario I used to run at Totalcon called the Underground Labyrinth. It was a maze with six rooms, each of which had a "goal hex". Players scored points by ending movement on a goal hex, and each player had to hit the six goal hexes in a pre-defined, random sequence. One of the six goal rooms was underwater, but because of the high casualty rate (players were *required* to go into that room), I made a house ruling that this room was not filled with water, but with my own concoction called "synth-2-O", which acted like water for movement and firing range purposes (and let players choose between selecting an SRM-6 versus a torpedo-6 launcher!!!), but did NOT cause flooding damage. I made up some cocamamie story about the synth-2-O having some yuckity-yuck electrical conductivity characteristics... blah...blah...blah. Anyway, that worked pretty well.

Well, remember that Davion Arena can be 'configured' to simulate underwater fights.
Has anyone fought on Ice? I know that stuff tends to be amazingly slick, but Ive never been in that situation before.
I have, however, managed to skid on pavement, and smear one of my mechs into a building. The explosion was really pretty, and Blackhand laughed for five minutes over that one.....

Casey and I ran events at Totalcon that were:

1) On a moon with .1 gravity, and no atmosphere to speak of. - This was one of the most fun events that we ran as one the very first turn someone ran a Jenner 55 hexes, failed a pilot check and ripped its legs off them tumbled across the moonscape. After that people were so afraid to go fast until a blackjack charged a shadowhawk after moving 50 or so hexes, and pretty much stepped right through the mech.

2) Underwater - Another favorite. The clans were supposed to attack a Kurita base, and landed only to find the base was underwater, and the snakes were ready for them. After the clan commander stalled for like three turns, the 'mothership' called down and explained to the troops, that they better get on with business, or they would all be merchant class. Was a wonderfully bloody battle, and I think Chandra managed to finally screw up enough courage to get to the base and destroy most of it before dying.

3) In caverns that were trapped to be rather deadly, but adapted for a solaris style event - Chihawk loves this event. Simple caverns with hexes that are marked as red, yellow or blue. The red hexes launch effectively inferno fluid on you. The blue hexes open to a hole in the floor of a random level depth (1, 2, or 3), and a chance of water flooding in. The yellow hexes pivot the mech leaving the hex up to 5 hex sides to the right, with pilot checks having to be made depending on the number of hex sides (my personal favorite, as I've seen mechs go into a three hex pattern of yellow, and never vome out).

4) On an Ice planet - I can't remember much on this one, as I think John designed this event himself, but I do know he had steam effects, and freezing effects, as well as possible weather effects.

5) On a hot furball of a planet - This was the one Chihawk ran last totalcon, and was another on John designed himself.

6) In a dense cityscape - This was one of the first ones we did. The city was full of tanks and lighter mechs, and the attackers got their butts handed to them as everyone except for Scott ignored the silly little tanks (with AC20s) as they charged the mechs.


We had an event designed on a Jungle planet - It turned into a physical fest, or it lasted forever, and we were worried that folks at a con wouldn't get physical fast enough to finish in four hours.

One we toyed with but never finished was a fight up a very rocky mountain with avalances and falling mechs.
