Studio Chief Blacklists 'Rings'-Leader Jackson
By BORYS KIT, Reuters
LOS ANGELES (Jan. 11) - An escalation in the war of words between New Line co-chairman Bob Shaye and "Lord of the Rings" filmmaker Peter Jackson appears to be nixing any possible reconciliation between the two -- or any chance that Jackson will direct the trilogy's prequel, "The Hobbit."
In an interview with the Sci Fi Channel news service Sci Fi Wire, Shaye said Jackson will never make another movie for the studio and said the filmmaker just wants more money.
"I don't care about Peter Jackson anymore," Shaye said. "He wants to have another $100 million or $50 million, whatever he's suing us for. He doesn't want to sit down and talk about it. He thinks that we owe him something after we've paid him over a quarter of a billion dollars. ... Cheers, Peter."
In response, Jackson issued a statement Tuesday that did not attack Shaye but was aimed at clarifying his issue with New Line. Jackson said the lawsuit stems from the studio's refusal to account for financial anomalies that surfaced from a partial audit of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and that it has denied his repeated requests to audit "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King."
"Fundamentally, our legal action is about holding New Line to its contractual obligations and promises," Jackson said. "It is regrettable that Bob has chosen to make it personal. I have always had the highest respect and affection for Bob and other senior management at New Line and continue to do so."

Having read J.J. Epstien's "The Big Picture," I have to agree with Jonathan Last's assessment.
This is the kind of thing Studios do all the time in order to guarentee their income flow. Jackson should have known that. And complaining about a carefully constructed rounding error is hideosly bad form for a director who has had exactly 1 great studio movie.
(Counted as such: LOTR is one project, funded entirely as a block without having seen any final project. King Kong didn't do any better than any other movie with it's budget would have done.) _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

I forgot, wasn't the argument over royalties? In which case it does count as 3 movies, unless the contract stated otherwise.
Maybe thats the rounding error? 3 to become 1?

The idea was more that Jackson doesn't have the clout to be making demands of the studio that change it's normal accounting practices.
Arnold Swcharteneger, on the other hand, does have such clout, as his contract for T3 demonstrated. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

After all three Lord of the Rings movies, you would think Jackson should have some clout of his own.

One would think...but this is Hollywood, where they can do what they want and it doesn't have to make sense, kind of like the government...
