I was thinking, that we have these various states who supposedly train their soldiers and yet there really is no doctrine per se. So why not? Why isn't there a set of guidelines that say for X tactical problem, the only solution is Y? The Soviets and Chinese have that doctrine and I can easily see the Cappellans having that. Even in more "liberal" minded states that encourage their junior leaders to take the initiative there may be some by the book answer that can be ignored.

Actually in some ways they do. Not state wide, but the FMs list tatics commonly used by each regiment or group of regiments.

I don't mean the individual regiments, but rather state wide.

I can see the Crappies saying something like "Always mass fire on single targets before moving on to another target" while the Lyrans can say "You have assaults, always attack right up the middle and roll back their defenses."

I recall the Kurita doctrine was "throw all you have at them and stomp until they stop moving".

I dunno. Like the Israelis had a standing order to counter attack...until the 1967 War and the introduction of ATGMs.

The old house manuals and I think the current field manuals mention general doctrine for each of the IS states. Other manuals mention it here and there, though of course, being FASA, the is a lack of consistency at times.

In general:

Kurita: Honorable samurai warfare. Either high speed lights for strikes or heavy brawlers for smaurai duels. Under Teddy Kurita, things are changing to combined arms, focus firepower, do what you have to do to win. The Honor of theDragon comes before personal honor.

Liao: Officers are to win at any cost, or die trying. Use deceptive tactics, especially electronics and mines, to make up for smaller military. Sun Tzu is trying to revamp military to encourage initiatize among officers, and to allow officers to fail so long as they preserve their command to win another day.

Steiner: Bigger is better. Weapons, mechs, etc. Promote the guy with the most family connections. If there is a problem, throw assault mechs at it. If that doesn't work, you didn't use enough assault mechs. If all else fails, throw money at them.

Davion: mobile warfare, individual leaders at all levels are encouraged to think for themselves and show initiative. Superior tactical skill by leaders, especially unorthodox/unpredictable tactics. Jump capability is common on many mech designs. If all else fails, win by default because you are the "good guys".

Marik: preserve the chain of command because it took 5 frickin' years to get a combination of officers that would make all the internal factions happy (or at least enough that they don't outright complain). Deliver as much firepower as possible: don't waste time with silly things like electronics that do not contribute dircetly to the fight (this is slowly changing).

Periphery: Don't run out of duct tape and bailin' wire. Use the Pleasure Circus to spread VDs to soldiers of potential threats (Magistracy of Canopus). Prepare for the ineveitable Davion invasion (Taurian Concordat). Don't let the bastards land in the first place, or we're really in trouble (Outworlds Alliance). Hail Caesar! (Marian Hegemony)

Mercs: Highest paying contract available with the least risks. Come home in one piece: you can't spend your paycheck if you're dead. Conveniently forget to mention the extra salvage in your dropship hold that you were supposed to turn over to you employer.

Pirates: Take what you want and run like hell. Hope that the bubble gum holding your hip actuator together doesn't give out. Let your cronies take the risks.

I think that about sums it up, for the IS at least.
