Marik tends to get ignored, so I figured I'd put together a scenario you don't see that often. One of the interesting things I found here was the real shortage of designs both of these Houses have in the the light weight classification. Steiner you expect this of, but they actually have the dedicated Commando. Marik has no light 'mechs of their own as of 3025, although they do have the Hermes II for scouting.

Without further ado:

Marik:

PHX-1 Phoenix Hawk
HER-2S Hermes II
LCT-1V Locust
LCT-3V Locust

Steiner:

SHD-2H Shadow Hawk
COM-2D Commando x2
FS9-H Firestarted

I made my vote for the heavier, but slower Steiner forces. Unless the Marik leader gets good iniative alot, the Steiner forces will just walk all over him with superior firepower. That being said, iniative is a tough thing to predict, and back shots from those Locusts will take a toll. Plus Phoenix Hawks are just deadly.

I ran this with megamek, and the score stood at one-to-one (one Locust destroyed and one Commando destroyed) when megamek crashed.

Marik without good scouts in 3025? That's a joke, right?

Marik had a good supply of Spiders and they produced Locusts and Cicadas. FWL had also produced the Hermes. I can hardly imagine that they didn't have Stingers, Wasps and Phoenix Hawks, all quite common in IS. Not mentioning that you may always use vehicles.

OK, I forgot the Spider...and I intentionally overlooked the Cicada, as its just such a silly design.

My point was that they didn't have a dedicated light design of their own, like Kurita's Jenner, Steiner's Commando, Davion's Javelin, and Liao's Raven...I guess Marik has the Spider, but that's hardly a 'mech that is deployed in massive numbers like the others.

The real Marik workhorse scout is the Hermes II, along with the Locusts, Wasps, Stingers, and Phoenix Hawks that everyone has.

Good thing you qualified that otherwise I was going to follow up with the pile on.

Remeber, Marik uses aresospace for recon.

But their recon is on the heavier side, Hermes II, Cicada, Vulcan being non-standard Mechs. And of course they can throw in slews of P-hawks and the insect Mechs.

So their recon is a little slower in some ways but much more recon in force.

Look after 3055 and they make the Hammer. For some reason jusdt not big on the some what speedy light Mech. They do slow and light or really fast and light.

AWAD-Hermes II looks cool, fights like a woose

I actually rather like the Hermes II. Its quickish, has a lot of armor, and its got a long range gun that light 'mechs will have to take seriously. LRMs might do more damage, but have the drawback of a minimum range, which can hurt you when you're trying to train the thing on Locusts or Jenners.

Not arguing about the workhorse, but still they have this. It isn't what it used to be, and it isn't that common as it was in SL era, but it's still one of the best scout mechs available.

One thing that strikes me about these lances: both have a mix of jumping and groundpounder mechs. That's a big problem in my book, along with the different ground speeds. My ideal scout lance has mechs with the same movement profile all over. A PXH leading three Stingers/Wasps, for example. This way the whole lance can go everywhere one of the mechs can go. No heroics with the fastest mech scouting areas alone, no last stands as the slowest mech holds off enemy scout hunters.

Yes, that's beside the point. The Steiner lance looks more resilient so I vote for it. Speed is not much of an issue when you're scouting for Lyran assault mechs.

I tend to ignore the SL downgrades...they never made too much sense to me, and were only ever introduced to fill the pages left blank in TRO 3025 when the unseen were removed. Old 'mechs with XL engines wouldn't have been downgraded to standard engines...they would have run until somebody shot them to pieces, and then they would have used for spare parts.

Some of the manufacturing lines were still intact when no advanced engines were available, so they only replaced the components with "inferior" technology. I don't think that the downgrades are too unreal.

So I ran this as the Steiner lance, And I got trashed, but I did lose a comamndo in round 3 because it slid on the pavement and exploded. So I may not count that one becaue I lost it before the fighting even began.

There's two Commandos. And the Phoenix Hawk kills both of them pretty regularly.

The ground-bound Commandos are at a real disadvantage against the Phoenix Hawk. Twice now I've used the Phoenix Hawk to take them both on, keeping my Hermes II free to chip away at the Shadow Hawk. If they were jumpers they might have a chance, but as it is, the Hawk regularly gets behind one of them, cracks its armor with its large laser, and a Commando goes boom.

Of course, last time around I ran the Hawk up to twelve heat...but how often do you have a Commando lying face-down with the pilot unconscious...pile it on!!!
