Interesting question popped into my head while reading another post. If you could choose your units with little to no restrictions, would you choose a diverse selection of units or would you choose a few units and have multiples of them? Say you had to fill out a company. You have no real idea of what you will be up against nor what your job will be from month to month. Do you use units that can share parts supplies? Or do you use a variety of unit types to make sure you can get any job done? Do you go somewhere in between?
What is your company? Can do any job from scouting to frontal assaults, fast skirmishing to bunker busting, raids to static defense.
I am interesting in the various results and will post mine own when I make up my mind.

I'd go for lots of similar units.

A lance each from the Wolverine-Griffin-Shadow Hawk triad wouldn't be too bad, and could handle most missions quite nicely I think.

Well, You've SEEN some of my setups... but I'll explain how I do things here anyways.

I prefer many different chasis, even in such a small sized unit as a single company. But I also like to do pairs of some things, usually 2 or 3 pairs to a company.

If I have absolutely 0 restrictions on what I'd take it would be something like this:

Lance 1: 4x Heavies or 2x Assault & 2x Heavy
Lance 2: A mix of heavies and strong line mediums
Lance 3: 4x Fast, but still combat capable mediums. I always prefer to scout with fast meds over lights.

Here is an example Company (Keep in mind I mostly play level 2...)
Also I'm having a hard time concentrating so this isn't finished.. frelling wisdom teeth. All 4 are coming out soon.

Marauder
Marauder
Warhammer
Thunderbolt

Wolverine
Wolverine
....
....

Hyrax (one of my custom mechs)

...
...

I fall somewhere in between. While I like having some duplications in a company, I like to be able to do most things moderately/well above average. As opposed to a few things VERY well, and a lot of others ok. It depends upon the function of the unit in question mostly. What is their purpose in the grand scheme of things, and what else are they likely to find themselves doing if the tables were suddenly reversed. Don't know if that was helpful at all. Give me an example of what type unit you are looking for and I will tell you what I would try to use in it. Best I can do at the moment.

When it comes to forces, i like to pick a variety of units. I'm a campaign like player who takes heavily from the universe. Retreat or Eject over destroyed. Stuff like that....

Even when choosing a variety i try to select units with similar weapons. I try to keep to five or less weapons per company so repairs can be done efficiently.

If i had not limit, i would likely take what i term MPMs or Multi-Purpose Mechs with 1 omni mech from each weight class. I like this method most because it reduces the variation of parts i need to supply my force with. 1 armor standard, 1 internal standard, 1 heat sink standard, and no more then 4 standards for every other component excluding weapons.

But i play with mostly a medium base with heavy support. I only use assaults in a heavy hammer lance and lights as skirmisher/scouts.

Thats about it.

The basic criteria: a company that can do absolutely anything and everything.

That's why I chose a lance each from the Triad. It's hard to find generalists more general than Griffins, Shadow Hawks, and Wolverines.

Blah, you can have my Shadow Hawks too. I've never found any sensible use for them except as spare parts for my Griffins and Wolverines.

My generalist company could well look something like this:

HQ:
Zeus
Zeus
Thunderbolt
Thunderbolt

Medium line:
Griffin
Griffin
Wolverine
Wolverine

Light guys:
Phoenix Hawk
Stinger
Stinger
Wasp

Admittedly nothing extra, but spares and replacements should be available for everything.
