Ok I have been thinking about getting a external hard drive and was curious what I should know about them first.
I just have some basic questions so Ill write them out and let anyone answere them. (and I am asking them because I just really dont know).
1. If I use the external h-drive can I store games on it and still play them with no issues?
2. Is yes how much lag do you see from them?
3. Is the EHD good only for files? or can other programs be used installed on it (the non game kind)?
That is really all I can think of right now.

That would depend on how you connect it. An external drive with USB or Firewire connection will be slowed down by the connection, not the drive. While you might be able to play games it would probably be laggy compared to having the same class of drive in your computer. And most tech sites only mention these for backups. There's also a new e.SATA interface, offering you the possibility of full speed SATA drives in an external housing. That would be useful for running programs.
Controllers are available for all three if your motherboard lacks them.
You might want to check under the hood of your machine first. Once you know what kind of hardware you have you can decide on what to connect - and if it's even worth spending the money on it rather than buying a new machine.

1) USB or Firewire Drive will function just like a regular drive once you plug it into the computer and a seperate power source. THe only real difference would be when you want to disconnect it or turn it off, then you should "remove" it form your system first but stopping it. More on that if you need help, let me know.
2) If you want to save some money on an External Hard Drive, you can get the "Case" seperately and just use a regular hard drive that you have lying around. That is what I did with 2 extra drive I had fomr previous computer builds. You just unscrew/open the case and hook up the drive the same way you would normally.
3) As for what you want to do with it you can do what ever you want, use it for back up (which is what most people do), or as a seperate hard drive to run programs.
I've run a few programss form it, including Neverwinter Nights and I haven't noticed any "lag" or slowing down (using both USB abd USB 2.0).
