I have been wondering what some of the community thinks of playing with painted minis.
You see the choices. Please give me a reason.
First is just have the right mini, try not to proxy, does not even have to be primed.
Simple job is painted and based. Nothing complex but you have hordes with paint on them.
Next are those beautiful minis, or attempts at them. Would you rather have a hand full of artwork and then spoooge on the table?
The last is if you do not give a rat what is used.
I have at least 200 unpainted, over 200 painted. My latest group really does not care, unlike my previous players. Also the new Total Warfare seems to put some emphasis on the minis. As anything it is just an opinion poll.
AWAD- Those Fighting Piranha decals are great.

SD's glad for being able to obtain 8 figures...only 3 of them are official, the rest falls to low quality home made copies

Personally, I could care less what's on the table. I'm not going to allow the vagaries of what's available on ebay effect the composition of my units.
If I had the time and money, sure, I'd try to put a nice looking-well painted and coordinated group of minis on the board, but I've got better things to spend my money on.
I wonder of FanPro is going to try and go the GW route of requiring "accurate" minis for tournament play. Its a nice way to get people to buy the minis, but personally, it will alienate me.

Couldn't care less. There's plenty enough stand-up cardboard mechs in our boxes, and we'll proxy the ones that aren't available. We played Monte Diablo with paper counters instead of minis.

I started Battletech with minis, and no matter whether I'm playing with "officials", offshoots, or cardboard cutouts, I love this game more than any other form of RPG. That being said, theres nothing cooler than a hand painted mini that you worked on for hours to represent exactly what you want. As for the group I play with, you may not use proxies. If you don't have the mini, you don't own the mech. (My guys all buy, paint, and maintain their own) We've even been known to paint damage on them and leave limbs off if repairs couldn't be completed between battles! (yeah I know get a life) Battle tech rules!

Generally speaking, I don't exactly care what I use.
However, if I do use minis then I want them to look good. I've actually discovered a system that allows me to crank out good-looking minis without having to use primer or expensive paints. I can share it if anyone would like.

The initial allure of this game for me was the minis. That, and the 3-D board used at the first TotalCon I attended.
After Hardware taught me to play, I quickly ran out and bought a Shadow Hawk. I must have painted that mech 8 times since then! After having played D&D for years, and collecting/painting tons of fantasy minis, this ultra kewl Sci-Fi mini was forever to be my favorite. Had this game been relegated to just paper and pen, I probably would have never picked it up, although now I could just as well play it with coins and paper clips.
It is fun to see the expressions on people's faces at the Con when they see my boards and minis. I get many kudos, and I hope that it brings in new players. Many people have told me that they had never envisioned the game in this scope...so I guess it works.

Well I guess at times I am a bit of a stickler and like seeing at least primed minis on the board. And though I wont claim to be an outstanding mech artist, I think I can hold my own when it comes to painting (I had a Raijin win Best of SciFi show at a spokane gaming convention a few years ago). So I prefer to paint what I use (though I havent painted for a long time now). some day I will geet a digital camera and get some minis on the web.

Materials:
1 * 00 paint brush
Testor's model paint - acrylic
clear coat.
All of these items can be picked up at Wal-Mart.
The process is as follows. Note that you must allow 15 - 30 minutes' drying time.
1. Assemble the mini. If it is to be mounted onto a hex base, do it at this time; it'll give you something to grip while you're painting.
2. Plot out your overall color scheme. This will affect the very first coat you do.
Light - Use white paint as your very first coat.
Dark - Use black paint as your very first coat.
Bold - Use black paint as your very first coat.
Apply a light coat of paint. Depending upon how much paint you use and how pourous the mini is, that first coat will actually get absorbed into the miniature itself. If you did it right, then the fine details should still be visible.
The white paint will serve to soften whatever paint is used on top of it. Conversely, the black paint will make things darker and make them stand out more.
3. If you are doing a BTech mini, then paint the mini in the base coat of your design. For example, if you're going for jungle camoflague then you would paint the entire mech olive drab.
If you are working with a D&D or similar mini, determine what makes up most of the mini and paint it. For example, if you have a cleric in a long robe then paint the robe.
*Note: Be very careful if you intend to use a flourescent color. It has been my experience that Testor's flourescent acrylics tend to be thin enough to almost be a wash. If you do it wrong, then your mini will look like something from Tron.*
4. This is the stage in which you paint your fine detail.
5. Apply a layer of clear-coat to the mini itself. Clear-coat is a urethane, meaning that once it dries it'll serve to protect not only the paint job but also the mini itself. This is especially important as you are using acrylics; even once the paint is dried hard, it can still wash off easily.
6. If you are going to decorate the hex base, do so now.

| My group usually prefers to have the right mini if it's available. And if it's painted, even better. Personally, I have over 200 minis myself, but that's more due to my just thinking those particular minis are cool, rather than because that's what we use. If I actually have the correct mini to use, great, otherwise I don't care what's being used.

I prefer using minis over using cut out and the like. It doesn't matter if they are painted or not, especially if it is a private game. But when I'm playing in a public place, I would prefer painted as some others have said, the minis are "eye catching" and what tends to draw newer younger and hopefully long time players to the game.
I'd always prefer not to have to use a proxy, but as I do not have a huge collection, let alone every mech if I need them, I'll use a proxy because Id rather have a mini then a cut out or some other stand in figure.

I am little surprised by the poll results so far. How many people would rather have botched greatness surprised me.
I lean towards the simple job. It was something I had to learn. Otherwise I have piles of unpainted minis; like I currently do, but it could be worse.

Well I think botched greatness is a little misleading. Most of my minis are very detailed so they arent simple. And they are great to me but to others they may not like them. /shrug. So mabey separating the 2 should be in order.
