:SaberDance steps into the door, hands his sidearm to Lurch, hangs his hat by his normal booth, and orders a drink:

"I'm back everyone. Not, I'm sure, that you missed me. I've been on assignment to Terra at a conference with ComStar and some others on language and translation. It was a great success and now I spread my good fortune. Drinks all around."

OOC: just got back from a philosophy conference in Oklahoma City (UCOK) where I delivered a paper on language and understanding. Dr. Peter Ludlow of the University of Michigan also delivered a paper on the "Myth of Human Language." Other papers were about human understanding in memory, ethics, and science and their ties to language. Dr. Ludlow critiqued my paper and said it was pretty good, though I was still wrong. I said the same about his paper, so we're all mutually stupid.

*Raises his glass in toast to his returned friend*

Hello mate, Seraph and I' have missed ya

Many things have happened whilst you were away, our old unit disbanded, however I now command a new batallion of mercs called Blighted Sun (search couple pages of posts back to find it), and I also got a part time job here at the Bar and Grill. Great benefit of having a private booth with all the gizmos and privacy curtain that has built in white noise generators.

I look forward to our next sim (MegaMek) battle, as I've not had many good ones lately!

My part was about the conceptualization of language. How do we know that the words we teach relate to the object we're referencing. It tied in to the larger ideas about teaching computers to think, part of which is teaching them language.

Dr. Ludlow argued that teaching computers "language" was impossible, since humans don't speak "language" they communicate in ad-hoc "micro-languages." As long as we try to teach computers to speak language, rather than to communicate, our efforts will be wasted.

I think he's an old crank. But he outranks me.

OOC: interesting theme, I think that what Ludlow said sounds reasonable to me, but I can't add much to this talk... I ended somewhere between Pascal and Delphi

OOC: was that post referring to ComStar conference too?

Daedster sneaks quietly into the bar and looks around. Not seeing any blue marsupials he checks in a considerable quantity of odd weaponry, then bellies up to the bar and orders a Timbiqui dark.

Welcome to Mordel's Daedstar, now kindly lift your feet so I can sweep up all the caked up dirt you just left all over the floor. Where have those boots been, Sudeten and back without a cleaning?

*Frumps around and sweeps up the mess before Chihawk can see it and berate him for not doing his job*

Don't be afraid, no one angered me enough today to punish you with my singing

OOC: I wonder if songs (any) performed by me can be considered as breath weapon...

My singing is pretty horrid as well. I usually only sing in combat on the opponent's radio frequencies.

I get shot at a lot.
