Notes from the designer:

The Commanche sprang out of an effort on my part to create a Hatchetman custom. My goal was to create a Hatchetman who could actually engage targets over a fairly long range. My original idea was to drop the AC/10 for an AC/5 , an LRM/5, CASE, LRM ammo, and a small laser.

Instead, I decided to go the endo and DHS route. This freed up so much tonnage that I decided to tinker. The AC/10 was replaced with an ERPPC, accomplishing the original goal and allowing the mech to stay in the field for a longer period of time.

With the additional tonnage, I decided to add an AC/2. This serves several purposes. First and foremost is that the AC/2 provides quite a bit of range; it can actually engage a target just beyond the max range of the ERPPC. Not only that, it also provides an aestethic and tactical counter-balance to the hatchet. Also, for those Commanche pilots in Davion space, the AC/2 allows the pilot to use the new Davion AC munitions for extra potential.

Even with the DHS, the heat curve is such that if a pilot jumps and does an alpha strike (which can realistically happen due to the range brackets) he'll generate enough heat to engage them.
