Do you mean Rachael "St. Pancake" Corrie?

Don't care whether or not people agree with what she did; standing in an area after being told bulldozers were coming through was just freakin' stupid.

Never heard about this. It seems like morbidly flat humor. I meant this joke.

Long and short of it?

A few years back, the government of Israel announced that if the identity of a suicide bomber was discovered then the Army would be sent in to bulldoze their residence. The rationale (IIRC) was that people were choosing to be suicide bombers due to the pay-out to some of the families; by knocking down the homestead, it'd actually make things worse.

So a bunch of US activists went down to Israel to block the bulldozing efforts. One of these activists was Rachael Corrie. She and a few friends stood in front of a home that was to be bulldozed, when a soldier with the IDF made repeated attempts to warn them that the bulldozers were coming. The friends left, but Corrie stayed.

Keep in mind that the IDF tacks on armor plating to their bulldozers to protect the driver. This keeps the driver safe, but cuts into visibility. Otherwise, the IDF bulldozers are literally off-the-line Caterpillers.

Corrie was still there when the first bulldozer came. It came from a different portion of the building from where Corrie was standing. Due to the limited visibility and the engine noise, he didn't know about Corrie's presence until it was too late - he had knocked a wall on top of her and had driven over it. Corrie died instantly.

To this day, both the IDF and Caterpillar have been the subject of much international scrutiny and even a lawsuit or two due to her death. The UN has even tried to declare Caterpillar to be guilty of "war crimes" for its continued sales to Israel. Thing is, when it was proposed that Caterpillar launch its own investigation of the matter over 90% of stockholders said "no;" they were satisfied with the IDF investigation which showed it to be a tragic accident.

The "St. Pancake" nickname came as a joke about how pro-Palestinian and anti-war activist groups have made her into a martyr.

For those that need a reminder, that story doesn't open this thread to a political discussion.

Ah, "splorch". Such a funny word. Sounds funny, and almost anything it relates to can get a giggle, if just for the sheer ludicarsy of what it was.
Barkeep, give, Kraken a drink on me. I need to see if I can send some sort of high-strength degreasing agent to his Mechbay.

I remember that incident. I even saw a picture slide show of the event. Seems someone knew she was about to get squished. Maybe she even knew, nobody will know and it will continue to be debated by those who care. I think it shoulda been a Darwin Award candidate but I think it got dismissed due to some guideline for submission.

In his usual business atire, Kraken steps into the Bar. This time however, he's not alone.

With him is a tall individual, almost as tall as Kraken but with more visible muscle mass. His build, coupled with his bearing, scream "Clanner" out loud.

Purposefully, they walk over to a seemingly random patron sitting in an isolated corner. "About your rent,....." Kraken begins.

"What about it?" the patron replies.

"You're two months behind. Please come with us to the office so that we can get the matter sorted out."

"Make me."

"Quinze? You heard the man."

"You were given a simple request," the Clanner says to the patron. "The civilized response would have been to comply. Instead, you have dared us to compel you. And so we shall." With that, the Clanner physically lifts the patron out of his seat and carries him out the door.

"Put what he owes you on my tab," Kraken says out loud as he too leaves.

*****

OoC: How's this as a non-violent scenario?

Well, let's just say he loves his job.

The storyline is that my character faced off against Quinze during Bulldog; in fact, he's the person who left my character with the scars on his face. My character took out his mech's gyro, and he became my bondsman.

Eventually he was freed from his obligations and as a sign of good faith my character even "appropriated" a Marauder IIC for him. Quinze has come to the realization that as the Smoke Jaguars are no more, he needs to find a new life. He enjoys his bouts in the arena and serving as my head of security, as it gives him a chance to fight and show that he is still very skilled even though he's pushing thirty.
