I am sure many people have done their own take on this, or there is some tech level three rule which uses it. But this is my take on a shield.

Firstly, you need a hand actuator. The shield occupies all crits in the arm. It wieghs the same as the amount of armour you wish to apply to it (for example, 4tons standard armour means it wieghs 4 tons). The Shield then blocks any shots which would normally hit the appropriate torso and arm. A riot shield can also be used which protects the leg as well, this wieghs one ton plus what armour you wish to put onto it.

Special rules are
-No ferro armour,
-if it takes half its max damage in one turn, the shield shatters and is unusable.
-The mech can hide behind a riot shield. This means it can only fire weapons from the opposite arm (+2 mod), it can still walk and all shots hit shield accept if they would hit other arm.
-IS only.
-The shield (both types) do not block the appropriate torso, as being arm mounted i would expect the pilot to lower it as it fired, but for game purposes it coulnts as up.

Any ideas or do you have your own take on a shield?
The idea behind it was i have designed some Roman style units and i liked the idea of them hiding behind a shield while still using the Gladius (sword) in fighting. Hastati and Principes both have two large lasers to represent the Pila thrown before engaging.

I like it. Better than my "10-ton steel slab" idea. 2 points/ton...what was I thinking?

you know that Caesar never actually said "Cry Havoc....etc." It was Shakespeare who put that in his mouth.

Do you happen to know any quotes from that Caesar? Julius that is. Caesar being a title not a name.

Interesting. Add some tonnage for structure to help hold it together. Say, 10% of the shield's weight, rounded up to the nearest 0.5 tons. With a minumum of 1 ton. Remember your mech can only carry up to it's own weight.

Yes i do know that, it comes from Act III scene 1, and is spoken by Anthony, I did English Literature for my A-Level.

Also, his real name is Gaius Julii. Gaius being hs actual first name and Julii being his family name. His Uncle was Gaius Marius the one who conducted the Marius reforms changing the structure of the Legions from the Polybian Hastati, Principe and Triarii to a Legionary Cohort. (I didn't get this from my History A-level, because we did smegging Reformation of the European church!

Anyway, i have detracted from the point. I know it wasn't Caesar but i just liked the quote.

How about, "Constant exposure to dangers breeds contempt for them"-Hermocrates of Syracuse?

What does this have to do with my shield? You have done a Wanallo and took the topic of subject my Muddy friend!

(yes all Englishmen are strange!)

Nice Idea Seraph, is there any way to add this into my brand spanking new copy of HMpro from Mordel?!!?!?!?

I can see weapons but i am sure this is too 'unique' to add

now i do feel like an old man. Many may not remember this but a long time ago, easily more then 5 years, i posted this very idea along with several of the added suggestions that are occuring. Likely, the topic with said information is long lost to the archives of mordel or the abyse of time.

You make an old warrior proud.

All you have to do is make 10 shields. A 1-ton shield, 2-ton shield, 3-ton, etc. All the way to 10 tons.

I'll see if i can dig it out for you Vagabond.

I just like the thought that if a mech could have a sword a shield might be worth looking at. Obviously it wouldn't be on many mechs perhaps on a few royal guards for say comstar. It would be drawing it without them looking Dark Agey that would be the challenge.

Anyone thought about Axe-shields - shields with sharp edge that may be used as hatchet when needed (less accurate, but it is still better than nothing)

Just use it in charging attacks. The shield takes all the damage, the charging mech would only take damage if the shield failed.

I know that typical tower shield cannot be used to strike the enemy effectively (even running with something as clumsy as most mechs are with the shield risen to protect it against the force of the charge attack seems hard to believe), but smaller shield, protecting only upper torso and the arm would work nicely.
