Can bombs be used to attack space-borne targets?

Example: a Corsair fighter is making an attack pass on a McKenna class cruiser. After lining up his nose with the cruiser (instead of firing his lasers) he releases the bombs held beneath his wings, using their inertia to carry them to the target.

Would such an attack be possible?

I think that it is possible, but the fighter will probably need to enter the hex occupied by the target to hit something.

Edit: I don't know if there are some rules for this.

The rules say that bombs can only be used against ground targets.

I, however, say that Bombs can be used against space targets, but not in the manner you're saying. I'd imagine space-bombings would be more like runs skimming the suface of the target vessel and releasing bombs on an nice, important target like a weapons bay or the bridge...

I think that you could also fire in the same round, but only at the ship or fighters/mechs/BA on its surface.

Detach the bombs and slightly alter your course.

The bombs will continue on through space thanks to their inertia, and will detonate when/if they hit something.

In essence, the bombs will behave as if you had never let go of them, and smashed your ship into the target.

That's what physics says, anyway.

Shame on you! That has nothing to do with Btech!

Not that I'd mind a short write-up for that situation as a house rule. Perhaps a variant of the ramming rules?

I'd like to see those rules...

While I don't have the book handy right now, Aerotech 2 (Rev) does have rules for bombing space targets. I do remember that there is a minimum size for the targets though.....

Let's assume that the bombs lack power to pierce the armor of anything big enough to be hit by them. Until Discord finds the rules.

And here they are! Aerotech 2 revised states on page 57 under (appropriately enough) Space Bombers:

To bomb a space target, the following conditions must apply:
*Both the bomber and its target must be in space hexes.
*The target must be in a hex the bomber passed through on the turn of the attack. Resolve the attack during the Weapons Fire phase of the turn in which the fighter passed through the target hex.
*The fighter must have its nose aligned with its direction of travel (or with its largest vector if using the Advanced Movement rules).

Standard atmospheric bombing rules apply, except as follows:
*Fighters may only dive bomb their targets.
*The base to hit roll is the pilot's Gunnery skill +4.
*Apply a +1 to hit penalty for every point of thrust spent by the target in the turn in which it is attacked.
*A +1 to hit penalty applies for every 10,000 tons (or part thereof) the target masses under 100,000 tons.
* The target of a space bombing attack must mass at least 10,000 tons.
*Missed bombs do not scatter and do not hit other targets.
*Only HE,Cluster and LG bombs may be used. However, all three types function as HE rounds, inflicting 10 points of standard scale (1 point of capital scale)damage, applied in 50 point group (5 capital point) groups. Bombs only affect the targeted unit.
*TAG has no impact on space bombing.
