It's a fleet defender. This particular interceptor is intended to be launched at a moment's notice to scramble and kill incoming enemy fighters before they reach and threaten the fleet itself. The best way to do that is to make sure the enemy fighters never get anywhere near the fleet: to kill them as soon as possible, as far away as possible.
For a good example, look at the US Navy's F-14 Tomcat. It can carry up to six AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, and is (if I remember correctly) the only Navy fighter that does so. The Phoenix has a range of over 100 Nautical Miles (180+ Kilometers). The obvious design philosophy is to kill the enemy before he gets near the fleet and is able to launch any missiles of his own.

Just remember that slower fighters will face the enemy near to your ships, because faster and smaller ones will outrun them and engage the enemy sooner if they have time. heavier designs will have to patrol around.
I think that rules prefer dog-fights to long range sniping.
I heard that Phoenix missiles aren't too reliable.

Everything I have read and heard is its better than a 85% kill ratio, fire and forget, or fire and let the awacs take over and guide it in. And actually the range is closer to 150+ on the phoenix (used to work with a ret. tomcat driver, but he said that the unclassified range is what we have been told and the real range is actually closer to double.)

Hate to say it Mo, but one of the criteria is that XL engines are not allowed.

I heard that above Balkan it was some 25% (I cannot confirm that, just second, maybe third hand info, maybe some older version of Phoenix).

Since there have been no new entrants, I shall now declare the winner of the challenge!
It's a tie!
Between Delta's Dagger Interceptor and Vagabond's Aurora!
And now: we party!

Phew, why should I resort to violence, when I can use more peanuts (Kurita pacifist, ... no, these words don't look well written together, maybe paci - FIST ).
I just wonder how similar our concepts lvl 1 are (Yup, Yoda). If I used smaller engine (8/12) I would gain 4,5t to beef up armor and maybe to add some fuel. Heat would stay problematic, but loosing 20t doesn't come without paying some price. (other designs resembling this: Spad, Seydlitz Z1 (very loosely))
