You have a tendancy to make a lot of annoying little machine guns and small lasers on your ships...

Point defense weapons. They're there to shoot down missiles and the like. The more of them there are, the fewer missiles actually make contact with the hull.
My first few Aero designs were completely lacking in that department, and got panned because of it.

Yes, but aren't AMSes there for the same purpose? I'd also think AMSes would be better for the job.

Yes, dedicated anti-missile systems are better at that job. But look at the design date and tech level: 3025, level 1. AMSes aren't around. Also, AMSes can't target fighters and such that get too close.
