I've never thought very highly of the fact that artillery is supposed to be very rare in Battletech. The stuff is 20th/21st century technology at best; it shouldn't be difficult at all to build. But since I can't change canon, I've fixed the problem myself.

More of them to come later. I've got to fluff them out a little.

          BattleTech Vehicle Technical Readout
                      VALIDATED

Type/Model:    Mobile Long Tom
Tech:          Inner Sphere / 3067
Config:        Tracked Vehicle
Rules:         Level 2, Custom design

Mass:          75 tons
Power Plant:   225 GM I.C.E.
Cruise Speed:  32.4 km/h
Maximum Speed: 54.0 km/h
Armor Type:    StarGuard III Standard
Armament:
  1 Long Tom Artillery
  4 GM MiniGun Machine Guns
Manufacturer:  General Motors
  Location:    Kathil
Communications System:  Garret M250
Targeting & Tracking System: Garret T12A

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
Since the fall of the Star League, the ravages of the Succession Wars have
made many types of military equipment hard to come by. While recent technical
advances have drastically lessened this, it still exists - especially in the
realm of artillery. During the Succession Wars, a Long Tom track was almost as
valued as (and much rarer than) a BattleMech. While the rarity of BattleMechs
has decreased since the Clan invasion, the rarity of artillery has not. Even
the Eridani Light Horse (a unit not known for financial difficulties) had
great trouble replacing their artillery losses after Huntress.

GM has taken note of this, and has recently debuted a series of mobile
artillery vehicles. While most are of different sizes, speeds, and tonnages, a
large perecentage of parts are interchangeable between all of them. This makes
life easier for both GM and, more importantly, the buyer. The vehicles are
also inexpensive, using a minmum of advanced technology.

==Capabilities:==
At nearly two million c-bills, the Mobile Long Tom is intended primarily for
top of the line units, or for those who are otherwise willing to pay top
dollar for their artillery assets. At 75 tons and less than 55 kph, the Mobile
Long Tom is both slow and heavy. However, it is far superior to the Star
League era Long Tom track. It is also a single, self contained unit, easily
able to stop, fire off a shot or two, and then move to a new location. Being a
single vehicle also makes the Mobile Long Tom much easier to transport and
otherwise deal with than the Star League Long Tom, with its four trailers
(which together weigh in at 95 tons.)

The Mobile Long Tom mounts six tons of StarGuard armor. However, this armor is
meant primarily to protect the vehicle from counter-battery fire; it is not
sufficient to let the Long Tom survive direct fire. The vehicle is defended by
four machine guns on its front and sides, but any threat other than infantry
must be dealt with by a real combat unit.

==Deployment==
These artillery vehicles are available for general sale to most of the Inner
Sphere. The AFFS was the first to place orders, and, due to Kathil's location
in the Federated Suns, the AFFS was the first to recieve these vehicles. They
should fit very well into the existing RCT structure, and the LAAF has similar
expectations for their own RCTs. Many other states and mercenary units have
already either placed orders or shown interest.

While GM does not willingly discriminate against buyers of these vehicles,
there are some groups to whom they cannot sell. First, the laws of the
Federated Suns forbid GM from selling military equipment to the Draconis
Combine or Capellan Confederation. GM is currently waiting for a response as
to whether or not it may sell to the Taurian Concordat and Magistracy of
Canopus, who are allies of the Confederation. GM is also unable to sell to the
Word of Blake - this is a contractual obligation, a requirement for ComStar's
rather large order.

I think the fact that artillery is rare in Battletech is engineered to allow the Battlemech to be King of the Battlefield, the title that Artillery possesses today. A good, focused artillery barrage will level anything, even a dropship! To keep battles focused on the board, and not on off-board artillery, they had to make artillery quite rare.

Now, on to the vehicle. It's quite good. 25 shots will let it give support for a good while before it has to reload, and the four machine guns will protect it from any infantry that sneak behind the lines. The armor is good for its' role of protecting against counter-battery fire, giving it enough time to clear out of the area before taking fatal damage, and the speed is good enough to allow it to keep up with the front lines.

While not the most original thing on the block, it's still quite capable for its' role.

Overall: 92%

(Don't ask me why I decided to give a percentile score. I don't know.)

Um, it is actually much simpler then that. Battletech was designed around mechs and only recently [last decade] has things like infantry, vehicles, warships, and artillery started to matter. They explained away why these items are not present and only now as the universe expands are they creating rules for them. One of the many reasons I consider Battletech do for a TRUE second edition. The system was just not designed to handle what it is now being called on to handle, it was ment only to battle each other in mechs.

Nice design..
I like the fluff especially the bit about contractual requirements preventing the sale to the wobbies..
I'll bet you that a ComStar shipment gets 'lost' along the way

While less powerful than the Long Tom, the Mobile Sniper is faster and

The tracked Mobile Sniper is generally considered inferior to the wheeled
version. The heavier engine required to give a tracked vehicle the desired 65
kph speed means that the tracked Mobile Sniper carries somewhat lighter armor
than the wheeled version - and it carries no defensive weapons at all. It's
even more expensive. These tradeoffs were unavoidable, but the result is that
few have any desire for the tracked Sniper - it is only purchased by those who
know that terrain will be a significant detriment, and need the tracked
chassis to overcome it.

I wasn't terribly happy with the Sniper versions, because they lacked originality. So I took a different approach. Note that anything mounting a Thumper could mount an Arrow, and vice versa.

What do you think?

==Capabilities:==
The Mobile Thumper is the only vehicle of this series to mount truly advanced
equipment. The Thumper's respectable speed and amor, combined with it's large
ammo supply, make it a natural loner, able to go around without support for
some time and harrass the enemy with fire. A Guardian ECM suite was added to
the vehicle at the expense of armor, making it much harder to detect. As this
roaming tactic is meant more for a long battle than a guerilla campaign, the
vehicle's ICE engine (and need for fuel) is not much of a problem.

==Deployment==

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
Even
the Eridani Light Horse (a unit not known for financial difficulties) had
great trouble replacing their artillery losses from Huntress.

==Capabilities:==
The hover version of the Mobile Sniper is one of the odder vehicles of GM's
new artillery line. The vehicle has only moderate armor, and no defensive
weapons at all. However, it is fast, with a max speed of nearly 120 kph. As
long as the terrain isn't too rough, the hover Sniper can keep up with its
unit under any cirumstances. It can also outrun many threats, which helps make
up for its lack of armor and armament.

The skirt of the hover sniper is taller than most hovercraft's, which helps
the machine fire its main gun without slamming itself into the ground. Despite
this precaation, the hover Sniper's lift fans are heavily reinforced, designed
with the expectation that they will occasionally be hitting the ground when
the vehicle fires. With a properly trained crew, a hover Sniper can even fire
while the vehicle is hovering on water. In the midst of a sufficiently large
body of water, a group of hover Snipers can bombard an enemy with near
impunity.

==Deployment==

The hover Arrow is similar on construction to the hover Sniper. However, the

are the greater expense and lower ammunition capacity of the Arrow system.

The hover Arrow is generally less maintainance intensive than the Sniper,
because the lesser recoil of the Arrow launcher does not constantly force the
lift fans into damaging contact with the ground.

How about a Beagle Probe equiped one? So enemy infantry can't sneak up on the artillery units.

I like the hovercraft. Interesting mental picture. Big gun on a hovering platform. Excellent fluff, too. Especially the part about the Wobbies getting hosed.

Thanks. Unfortunately, the Wobblies will likely get some from their Marik minions. And ComStar's long standing tradition of neutrality means that they'll give some to the Dracs, because ComStar seems to give them some of everything. So I'm afraid that just the Capellans are out - sorry, Seraph.

Ok. It's not terribly new, but there are only so many useful combinations with these unless you start introducing fusion engines, and that goes against much of the idea.

How's this?

==Capabilities:==

The Beagle variant of the Mobile Thumper weighs five tons more than the
standard. It uses this extra tonnage to mount a Beagle Active Probe, which
helps keep it from being ambushed by infantry. It also sacrifices half of it
forward firepower, allowing it to mount a machine gun to the rear.

==Deployment==

I kinda like them without the Guardian and Beagle. Artillery is supposed to be a support element, which in turn requires support from spotters, lookouts, and defending troops. Besides, that advanced tech will be a bear to maintain and replace.

Besides, wasn't the point to have a vehicle that was easy to produce, and by result, easy to maintain? Advanced systems, while appearing more and more on various 'mechs and vehicles, are still supposed to be somewhat rare.

So do I. Remember, that one was a request, not my idea. I put the Guardian on the Thumoer because it seemed to make snse. The high ammo capacity already had it as a roaming sort of thing, so I just out on the Guardian to make it better at that. You could probably buy one without the Beagle if you wanted, and just put armor in that 1.5 tons instead.

Actually, the primary point was to make them inexpensive, although maintainability was part of it too. That's why none of them has a fusion engine.

I did design a fusion one though; it's fluffed as being for arctic environments, where an ICE engine won't work well. But I haven't posted it for that very reason - it sort of goes against one of the underlying ideas.
