The Machine Gun. It's not flashy, its not pretty, but it's always been there. And nothing has ever been done with it, aside from making a variant or two.
Someone should do something about that.
EDIT: added chance for weapon explosion
High-Explosive ammo
Rules level: 2
Cost/ton: 1,500 C-Bills
Damage (armored target): 3 points
Damage (unarmored target): 3D6 points
Special Rules: Can cook off like Inferno missiles
HE bullets are hollow lead slugs filled with plastic explosive, along with an ultra-simple trigger mechanism. When the bullet makes contact with something, the head of the slug deforms and "squashes", closing a very small electrical circuit inside the bullet, and detonating the explosive inside.
Incendiary Ammo
Rules Level: 2
Cost/ton: 1,500 C-Bills
Damage (armored target): 1 point
Damage (unarmored target): 2D6+4
Special Rules: raises target's heat by one point. Can start fires as an energy weapon. Can cook off like Inferno Missiles.
Incendiary bullets are hollow lead slugs filled with magnesium, with a small capsule of phosphorus at the head. When the bullet strikes, the phosphorus is released, and ignites upon contact with the air. The ignited phosphorus then ignites the magnesium, which burns quite fast and extremely hot.
Fragmentation
Rules Level: 2
Cost/ton: 2,000 C-Bills
Damage (armored target): None
Damage (unarmored target): 4D6+4 points
Special Rules: none.
Fragmentation bullets technically aren't bullets at all. The skin of the munition is specially designed to break away when it leaves the barrel, leaving a small cloud of metal slivers traveling to the target, like a combination of sabot shell and shotgun. These slivers, while capable of nothing more than nicking paint on armored targets, are devastating against unarmored infantry.
These munitions can be designated in half-ton lots, and can combine two types of ammunition into one critical slot. If one ammo type cooks off, all ammo cooks off. Every half-ton of incendiary ammo that cooks off raises the 'mechs heat level by 20 points, along with the normal damage.
For HE and Incendiary rounds, there is a chance that several of the bullets are defective, and may misfire and explode in the barrel. Before play, roll 2D6: on a roll of 8+, there are defective munitions in the ammo belt. When firing, roll 2D6 before making the To Hit roll: on a result of 2 or 12, the weapon jams and explodes, doing damage to the 'mechs internal structure equal to the ammunition's normal damage.

Not bad. I particularly like the incendiary rounds. I like things which increase the target's heat. The HE ammo looks nice too. Do these all have the same number of rounds per ton as standard MGs? Of course, you'd need four or five MGs, just to get some really good use out of the stuff.

With the HE and incendiary weapons, add a chance for the weapons to have the ammo feeding into the gun explode. For balance.

Yes. They have the same number of shots/ton as normal.

Also, I don't think they are very neglected at all. They are merely the most basic form of weapon still in use on modern weapons platforms,(mechs, tanks, etc..).
